Last summer, I had passed the 45th parallel and was fooling around with the radio when something sounding like jazz came on. A woman sang these lyrics: I'm going hunting...I'm the hunter. Hmmm. I found Bjork's version but nothing that seemed to be like the one I heard on that station.
Strangely, in my search I stumbled across the Ketchup song.

When life gets weird
Hearing the roaring of unseen highway because they took down the sound barrier...Go to a park and suddenly it's raining when the sun is shining...
Snatches of If I were a rich man emanate from the living room.
Ack. Life needs some order and stability!

Sports
I just watched a somewhat old clip about Images of the Female Athlete in the media. In the comments below, one person said "Women are sexy deal with it." So maybe the problem is that we are just too immature about women's sexuality? After all, there is also this clip, created by a young woman, about "Hot Female Athletes." However, I just think that it's too easy to push away the issues the first clip addresses by saying things like that or accepting it complacently. Why should women who are athletes be expected to look like a Victoria's Secret ad a disproportionate amount of the time? I was never officially involved in any team sports, myself. But I experienced some enjoyable moments playing basketball and soccer, and sometimes I think that I might have been, if things had been different...
When I was in the rainforest in Peru (a place where women's sexual desirability and "hotness" is certainly at a premium!) I noticed that girls and women were never actually playing soccer, but were always cheering the boys and men on in their community soccer games. However, during more family-focused games of volleyball, the participation of both sexes was usually the norm.

So why not
Why not watch a video about sexism in the media?
I think I'll not post the clip about "hos" recently aired on a certain late night comedy show since the first lady decided to plant a garden with some kids!

Culinary living in these suburbs
I'm still living a mile away from a 24-hour Korean restaurant, which I like, but don't frequent because it's not in my budget. At a bakery up the street, the buns stuffed with red bean paste have dropped to 99 cents each. That was also the place where I first tried fruit bing soo. The last new thing I tried was a dried persimmon from the Korean supermarket up the street. It was soft and powdery and shaped like a little donut. It had a slightly smokey taste, which vaguely reminded me of a hickory stick. I still have some in my fridge.
Of 2 Peruvian places in this area, I know that one sells pupusas, which are very popular around here, but not Peruvian, I think. I remember in the late 1990s I couldn't find a single Peruvian restaurant when I was living in Seattle. Tomorrow I will drive to work and see, as I do every morning, all the hombres standing on the curbs for day labor work. Last year, I ate ceviche at the Peruvian pupusa-selling place with some friends, and tried to describe a specialty, where they would often sell a little shooter of the ceviche juice by itself. "Oh what was it called, 'leche de tigre!' I think that was what it was called." And a guy came by smiling at us as he lifted our plates and we said it was very good. Later I went back and noticed 'leche de tigre' was on the menu. I thought, was that on there after that day? Or was it already on the menu before that?

Funny, too
Apology!
And a phrase from someone I can't remember:
"She felt like her brain was filling up with oatmeal."
Where on earth did I read that...it's stayed with me for years.
I hope it wasn't a Sweet Valley High book.

(Mostly) autobiographies
I just finished Borrowed Finery by Paula Fox, who I knew primarily as the author of One Eyed Cat, which I must have read when it first came out. When I was older, I also read The Slave Dancer. So many books my mother bought me as a kid! "The daughter Fox gave up for adoption, Linda Carroll, is the mother of controversial musician Courtney Love; Fox is, therefore, Love's biological maternal grandmother," says Wikipedia.
I thought a bit of the biography of Alice Sheldon, which I have read once or twice, but they had very different lives, of course.
Before Borrowed Finery, I read Burro Genius. One of my friends says he met that author at a relative's house, and the first thing he did was go upstairs and take a nap. Ha ha.

Weird Occurences
At a gathering you attend, a friend of a friend all of a sudden seems to make fun of you, right in the middle of you saying something, but then says it was something else and walks away unexpectedly. Another night, at your job, you think you see someone who reminds you of the friend's friend. And then, that one starts to remind you of some much younger person you once knew, but maybe not their real name, because it was a highschool foreign language class. Someone who liked to make fun of you! Hmmmm.

It is time...
Had a moment today in which I found myself existing in a very shaky yet detached emotional state, walking across a campus to a parking lot, and as a gust of wind hit me, it was blowing a tear across my cheek. I was so surprised that a part of me bothered with a wry observation, which was that maybe I was embodying an emotional state similar to the old picture of the "fake Indian guy" who has a tear trickling down his face. Which sadly, in our ultra-cynical society, people fun of, as if that kind of emotion is just hokey or cannot exist. Oh it can exist. But some people might not know it, or could have forgotten what they knew. I can't pretend I'm really in that moment now, because I feel much better. Who knows, I might even laugh about that picture sometime. But I can still be grateful that the moment happened, that expression exists. I can appreciate imperfection.

Fruit songs
Visited this poet once. Read the poems on that website: The Cabbage and The Professor Cries. Now thinking of little apartments in upstate NY and a little Greek restaurant, and a little diner, and another little restaurant and a little and a not so little 24 hour diner...and looking up old buildings in the library and being hot late at night and watching DVDs from the libary on a lap top at night. Really cheap rent! Solitary road trip to the winery laden finger lakes. Turning on TV in a cheap hotel room and seeing people walk around a sports dome. (Hurricane Katrina.) Weird crisscrossings of past and present times, day and night. Be real. That is real. Parks with carousels. With swimming pools. At night, the sound of something like a Peruvian clay whistle. Was actually the pinging of a fire alarm. A crazy typewriting friend down the hall who liked to play guitar and listen to Bathory. Movies like The Seventh Seal. Visiting a pet cemetary. (Later I moved to Illinois. More movie watching from fantastic library DVD collection. A movie about a woman from Iceland called The Seagull's Laughter.) I'm listening to gloomy classical music. I was so much younger then! Small fruit songs.

More positivity...
My friend, who wears red, and her boyfriend, who wears headphones, were in a positive story about the economy.
