Musical...

Bonobo ~ Eyesdown video

Bonobo ~ Black Sands

Some things I thought about

A piece of music was working on me and I felt sad and I have had a bit of a sore throat and I felt some things about some Patriarchal Ways in some systems...It made me think that external things like money, status, control--those things are not going to heal what needs to be healed. Why do I think some people need to change, need healing? Because they do unnecessarily harmful things. They treat people like crap when it's not necessary. It's almost like imitated abusive behavior. A woman who is "so supportive" won't fix that either, and old-fashioned ways of dealing with things are not going to fix imbalance problems. Acting out irresponsibly with people and discounting people is "shooting yourself in the foot" and being foolish in the midst of fake success. And it is sad because instead of that, they could have better success, real success.

Them: Black Friday, Pinata, Peace. Me: I will go outside tomorrow really

I will say...

that reading things like this are at least less stressful than wikipedia's entry about Christopher Columbus. Perhaps I didn't realize how terrible our "discoverer" was. He was horrible. Like Hitler-awful. And we have a holiday for him, and when I went to school they taught us that he proved the world wasn't flat. I think I won't to link to what I read. My brain is a fragile flower in the wake of all the cultural upheaval these days.

Yay, Katherine Hepburn

maybe it's in the atmosphere

It's as if there's something in the air triggering and exposing a lot of imbalances and griefs and it's almost as if it cannot be just any one thing or person or instance or event...it's as if a voice is whispering "look... look up..." so you can see the sky...

Gardenish thought

As I try to feel better and not sick or dizzy or off balance (begone, fat dairy sugar snack) I think I would like to lie down in a cabbage patch and get reborn.

Oh, food

I almost ventured out into a gloomy day and then I turned right around because I had to eat something with protein to make up for the good but too-much-bad-is-for-my-body ice cream which I then threw away with some still left in the container because the ice cream is like the gray day outside so now I'm making relatively healthy soup to through some greens in. Stupid ice cream. Need a better eating plan. WHICH ONE.

Another dream

Had a hospital room to sleep in, and realized I can leave now. Really nice man at the desk checked me out of the hospital. Really nice. That was a peaceful dream.

One dream

Dream #1: half swimming half drowning in too-choppy water, trying to ask tall men for advice (they weren't having problems) on how to get to a destination they weren't even that intersted in...a nice peaceful site with circles of rocks and hidden areas...could I swim in these waters (short cut) or did I need to walk around (the long way) they had no clue and I came up with my own answer. I would not be swimming there in this particular water...I would walk the long way around.

Please and enough

Isn't it weird when you go out and find a little respite in nature and then thoughts start coming back to you in the car and ENOUGH!

Oh but first, do communicate them.

Here's one analogy...old boys network environments have a bad habit of reminding me of riding in the back of the bus during Jr. High. The back of the bus was dominated by boys, and they got gross. Like, not even a little gross. A lot gross. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if everyone of them is making 5x more $$ than I am right now. Anyways, I got disgusted with their treatment and chose not to sit back there any longer. But some girls stayed. Really? Why? Are you that desperate for approval? I can hear myself thinking. This was decades ago.

 That's just one thought. I had another. I remember being in a particular sort of patriarchal household as a visitor, and the father was held in high esteem and he could be very nice. But when he did something imperfectly...when he messed up...he would stomp out, and the mother would yell at the daughter to clean up after him. Literally. I remember something as simple as a dish being broken was enough to ruin the man's composure. Then the mom would yell at the daughter and she would sadly sweep up the pieces. Why was this a dynamic in that family? I started thinking about it. Well, dad was the breadwinner, right? So if he's happy, the rest of the family can be happy too, right? But what if he's not happy? Uh oh.

This is how, in some patriarchal households, the supposed "head" of the table becomes the de facto infant.

"As an adult, I’ve often reflected on how skilled Ms. Fitz was at establishing absolute equality among us through transparent guidelines for how we behaved and through fostering a habit to, as she always put it, “walk a thought through.” With that motto, she meant for us to do the tough work of imagining consequences and potential harms of our actions, of taking care of one another by being careful, curious and respectful."

It was just a little grocery chatter

Yesterday I made a CRV purchase and the woman at the checkout told me a young man of about 21 came in and asked about the CRV. She assumed he was from out-of-state, but that was not the case. He said, "I never saw CRV on the receipt before." She said, "I think his mama's been buying his groceries for him."

Everyday another surprise

Top results for "women who achieve"

#1 At the TOP!
#2 And NEXT
#3 And UNDER THAT (ok that's more along the lines of what I had in mind)
#4 And THEN (that too)
#5 And THEN
#6 And THEN (well, we're back to our most popular topic again!)
#7 And THEN
# 8 And THEN
#9 And THEN
# 10 And THEN

Honestly, I have not read any of them, but from the titles alone, I think the last two are my favorites: #9 The Five Best Sex Positions For Female Orgasm Because There's Nothing Wrong With You (nothing! nothing! who told you there was anything wrong with you? did society do that? what? absolutely nothing is wrong with you, you orgasmic creature!)  and of course # 10 12 Steps To Achieve Gender Equality In Our Lifetimes for the optimism.

NOTED
For "women who achieve" out of the top ten results, five were about their orgasms, or lack thereof. HALF of the results were about that topic. For "men who achieve" out of the top ten results, Z-E-R-O were about their orgasms (or lack thereof).

I'm going to go read a book with pages now.

I will...

You won't get off...

" “We here talked, or murdered French all the evening with the master of the house and his family, and probably had a more amusing time than if we had completely understood one another,” Thoreau wrote. At bedtime, the men had to climb up to a high chamber with a wooden rail around it to reach a bed outfitted with linen sheets. Although Quebecois researchers disagree on the exact Binet house that Thoreau stayed in, they say that one of the prime candidates is a building that operates today as a Mexican restaurant called Senor Sombrero."

Games articles

Although I don't really play them, many others do...

"In 2002, Tracy Fullerton packed up her car, grabbed a copy of Walden and drove 10,000 miles around the United States. She had just closed up shop on her startup, which made massively multiplayer games to coincide with television shows such as The Weakest Link, and was thinking about what was next. On the trip, Fullerton read Thoreau, spent time in Concord, Massachusetts, and stumbled upon the answer."

GAMES ARE PART OF SOCIETAL CHANGE

"In the Kotaku article headlined "Teenage Girls Are Playing Video Games. You Just Might Not Hear Them," the male writer saw some of the data on girls' voiceless and solitary playing as troubling, writing: "That's how you go from a world where 59 percent of all girls between 13 and 17 play video games to a world where teenage girls are assumed not to exist in public video game spaces."
But then the girls and women weighed in.
Commenters such as NewViperWorld, a married young woman, explained that she wanted no contact with the vast population of boys and men on chat. "I have to be the 'property' so to speak of another male presence in the chat for people to treat me like an actual person rather than a source of mockery or sex," she wrote. "It's pathetic and annoying, and just not worth using a mic unless I have to because I need to coordinate with the rest of the team."

Older...

Some older things are not so bad. For example, what about that old phrase, "only the shadow knows." Example: "Is it a deeper wound that makes a person who could have been a caring and helpful friend instead act like....ONLY THE SHADOW KNOWS." (It would seem that there are actually still many systems in place which encourage certain individuals who absolutely have that ability to do so much better, to turn out to be, well, untrustworthy...I can only imagine that this behavior was learned. Sometimes it is better not to imitate one's forebears...unhappily it is possible to be reminded of, and even taken off guard by this more often than one would like. It also has a weird aspect, as if in a way, it's almost "natural," but it's really not ethical and that's what makes it so unpleasant...seems like a volcano. Some people might know it's dangerous, but they still want admire the lava flows. I, on the other hand, have a strong aversion to sticking around in order to get decimated by that volcano. Even though in real life, I would not be completely adverse to watching lava flows...in certain conditions...and perhaps I am being unfair to volcanos...after all, what about Pele, and Boys For...) Now I think I will KNIT.

That was just a dream

Well, had a a wolf dream. First a female wolf (no I don't know how I knew that) appeared and I was scared but it didn't bother me, but it had some cubs and one grabbed at me and kept shaking me. I got away with it (ha, typo, I meant to say "from it" but that's what happened) I ended up somehow shoving it inside a plastic bag and leaving it on a staircase and running away. Weird dream. Then I went into an area that was full of books and people who were sort of like scholars...I woke up thinking it's not such a good thing to shove an animal in a plastic bag and just leave it on a staircase. IRL some interesting propositions came to my attention:

Bless me father for I have sinned, but I do have a few questions...if you really are not the type of person who tolerates chauvinism then how and why on earth did you do such an awesome job of seeming like someone who does...Was it just out of impulsivity, or were you actually somehow trained to expect praise for unremarkable and even harmful behavior...

some ideas...

...about a man who leaves society and goes away into a mountainous area to be by himself in nature, maybe to sleep or even die, because that's what seemed the best choice to him at the time,,,a woman in the center of a lodge and it's night and it's warm inside and there's other people in the same building,,,a different woman in a town, and her awareness is primarily of the people in the town and how she has to live in it, and it's not always a pleasant time, but assimilation is her theme,,,and another man who is a farmer and he's surrounded by hills and farmland and working the land is his theme.

Something I read about...

Because I was thinking about certain dissatisfying aspects of culture...

"Symptoms of inflexible expectations of manhood and repressed individuality, symptoms of trying to be someone you're not. Feelings of inadequacy easily morph into bitterness.
For some boys, the King's identity fit like a glove. It was natural for them to aspire to the triumvirate of masculinity: sporting success, sexual conquest, and the possession of a steel liver.
But more often I saw boys for whom college didn't fit. Boys like me..."

~ http://www.vice.com/read/living-at-an-all-male-college-campus-was-a-lesson-in-hyper-sexism

"It took more than a year for me to realize that King's mystical reputation—that it was a sort of hedonistic Shangri-La free from responsibility—wasn't real. For it to be real, all men would have to be born the same, and women, well, they'd have to not take up space at all. It would've meant going back to a crueler, harsher time.

That's where this issue really comes from: the past. Any institution too heavily invested in the past loses sight of the present. And for colleges, this is painfully clear in their ideas of gender.
Oxford University's last all-male college, St. Benet's, opened its doors to women in 2015 with little fanfare or backlash. When queried about the perceived loss of tradition, the master of St. Benet's Professor Werner Jeanrond said, "It depends on how you view tradition. Is it something that you contribute to or something that is an exhibit in a museum?"

Geez

"“The U.S. government and missionaries made a concerted effort to transform Cherokee gender roles and attitudes towards sexuality and the body,” says Johnston. “They sought to inculcate Euro-American values of true womanhood and confine Cherokee women to the domestic sphere. They met with resistance from the traditional Cherokees, but, over the course of contact, wealthier members of that society, often of mixed ancestry, readily accepted both Christianity and the ideals of true womanhood. This gender inequality intersected with class inequality because more affluent women were freed from most domestic labor by hired help of slaves, and they had the means to acquire education and gentility. By the end of the 18th century, Cherokee women no longer agreed among themselves what it meant to be a woman.”

http://indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com/2011/01/10/power-cherokee-women-3767

So? Well...

So, did you think you would be learning new things? Enjoying intelligent discussion and conversation? Well, if you conformed to certain arbitrary preferences, you would fit in better... plus, if you were a certain gender, it would be just that much easier...

The Healing Power of Harmony

Regional lack of sleep

I have never lived in a place that had a noisier, more helicoptered sky.

So much is...

Allowed.

Yesterday I was thinking about the idea of information coming at people in different ways...

For example, I have had stories come at me in particular ways. Not as if they are just for entertainment purposes. To me they have psychological value. But, they are not what some people look for, because they are not scientific. No ones going to write that information up in a peer reviewed journal...

Anyways, then there was the icecream incident. I almost bought some but I put it back. I got kombucha and vegetables instead. I put it back just as two guys were selecting ice cream.

They were in the checkout line behind me. "We're getting these for our girlfriends. They are both pregnant but have different tastes." Okay...

I left, got in my car, opened my kombucha, looked up...yep, they parked right next to me too. They got in their car. There they are, two nice guys, being very ordinary. How ordinary. How...whatever. Like we walk the same planet and exist in different worlds.

I went home and looked up a Merck More Than A Mother video. Oops, I think I closed it. anyways there's a woman in it which describes a miserable set of circumstances but then Merck helped her set up a business. She can be happier now.

I saw some people relaying a tale of getting kicked out of an airport lounge because of a crying baby. Exclusion hurts...everybody...(REM song) sometimes...

I read about these people and they have positive attitudes.

I told him how weird this chain of information keeps coming at me. He said "I took this picture last night to show you how she was holding her paw."

I'm going to figure out what can be said about situations when people who maybe could have helped each other more, but end up not doing that due to serious communication issues.

It seems like there's been a lot of stuff about unnecessary immature behavior and hurtful usage of gender roles and exclusion regarding those things lately...

Film pertinence

Maybe I should watch the whole of Spotlight.

"There have been lots of fictional Bostons, but “Spotlight” is the rare film with a sense of the city’s clannishness. And McCarthy is finely attuned to the ways in which Boston’s tribal culture both made victims vulnerable and could be used to discredit anyone who dared to challenge its institutions and priorities.

"McCarthy and his fellow screenwriter, Josh Singer, did their own reporting to create the film’s script, revisiting the reporters’ methods and even breaking a crucial piece of news of their own, revealing that the Globe missed a chance to advance the abuse story as far back as 1993."

To me, acknowledging there has been community bias and stigma toward people regarding their bodies, fertility and infertility is just as important as acknowledging that there has been community bias and stigma towards single moms (and towards their kids) for not fitting into the "traditional" (not really) family model.

"We are here, we walk among the general public, 1 in 8. Look around, and chances are you do know someone other than yourself who has been touched by infertility. We are here, but we are not seen."

https://infertilegirlinafertileworld.wordpress.com/2014/05/10/hidden-in-plain-sight/#comments

"Rosner’s research shows that infertility often goes hand-in-hand with unacknowledged, or disenfranchised, grief...She found that the women’s ability to fully acknowledge, grieve and integrate, rather than disavow, the numerous losses of infertility into their life story facilitated personal growth, what Rosner refers to as “post-traumatic growth.”

https://news.upenn.edu/news/penn-researcher-looks-infertility-s-impact-women

"Several recent studies point to an increased social acceptance of women who choose to remain child-free in societies with greater gender parity. In other words, the larger the space women can occupy, the more opportunity there is for a variety of life choices for women. In places where women have greater power, there is less policing of the role of mother and room for a more inclusive view of how to be a woman."

http://www.latrobe.edu.au/news/articles/2016/opinion/social-exclusion-of-childless-women

In other words - to me it seems like social exclusion of one type of person is not that different from social exclusion of another.

"Social exclusion at the individual level results in an individual's exclusion from meaningful participation in society. An example is the exclusion of single mothers from the welfare system prior to welfare reforms of the 1900s."

"Single mothers were previously marginalized in spite of their significant role in the socializing of children due to views that an individual can only contribute meaningfully to society through "gainful" employment as well as a cultural bias against unwed mothers."
"More broadly, many women face social exclusion."

Yesterday's dream

Off the edge of a building and flying. First you were in a pool. Someone and you were in the same lane but swimming in opposite directions.  Now you are on top of a building, looking down. He's talking about how people are swimming wrong. On the edge of the building, part of you wants to go back down there and swim (what a conversation we could be having...what a banquet, what a feast!) He is very busy getting people to do as he says. Bye. Off the roof and flying and getting closer to the ground. Oooh smog and traffic.Try not to land in the middle of the freeway. You land in a yard with a fence and a sign. It was painted by someone with feminist sensibilities. You know you won't remember exactly what it says so you take a picture of it. Turn around and see that a part of the yard has an easier way out because the fence is not there. Crawl out of the yard. Back on the street. Look at signs. Try to get a sense of direction, start to plan to make a phone call to someone you trust...

I believe

Many people can become more aware....

"Aniston argues that the way that the media defines her (through her romantic relationships and lack of children) speaks to the way women are judged more generally, particularly in relation to their desirability and ‘use by date’. “The objectification and scrutiny we put women through is absurd and disturbing,” she says. “The way I am portrayed by the media is simply a reflection of how we see and portray women in general, measured against some warped standard of beauty.”

In many cultures, childless women still suffer discrimination, stigma and ostracism. Infertility can transform from an acute, private distress into a harsh public stigma with complex and devastating consequences. An inability to have a child or to become pregnant can result in being greatly isolated, disinherited or assaulted. This may result in divorce or physical and psychological violence.

~~~
According to Vanderpoel, “the stigmatization can be extreme in some countries, where infertile people are viewed as a burden on the socioeconomic well-being of a community. Stigma extends to the wider family, including siblings, parents and in-laws, who are deeply disappointed for the loss of continuity of their family and contribution to their community. This amplifies the guilt and shame felt by the infertile individual,” she says.
""We want to break the stigma and silence around infertility and pregnancy loss," Gervon explains. "We want it to be something that people can talk about openly and not feel like it's something to be ashamed of or embarrassed by or that it is something that is wrong with them."
"I would like to propose that something else is being sold here...To men, they're being sold this idea constantly that they are sexual subjects. They are in the driver's seat. It makes them feel powerful to see images of objectified women everywhere. And for women, we are being sold this idea that this is how we get our value and that this is the way to become the ideal sex object, which is why instead of sex selling, these ideas of subjectivity and objectivity are being sold."
Perhaps if you are a person who wants to succeed in a culture that devalues and discriminates against women, and you have no interest in challenging or changing that culture, it is only too easy to go along with behavior that devalues and discriminates against certain people. That is depressing.
What time is it now
Shift time. It's time to be that person in the bed with the tea and ginger who can be more highly focused on the soothing, healing stuff. SHIFT SHIFT SHIFT. Perhaps some people don't have bodies that give them that type of instruction. But some people do.
Trees after a storm
Sister says they already got their power back, and people are cleaning up the tree debris in their yards...
Friend in a place without power is walking around with her daughter, looking at the fallen trees
Mother Nature news
People I know who were in places that they were advised to evacuate chose to stay...They are without power, but otherwise they are fine.
People I know who are in places that were supposed to be better are sending pictures of houses with roofs cut in half.
In some cases, I think some people left places to go to a safer place, and the safer place turned out to be more damaged.
In other news, I think I heard someone fly into a rage in a nearby apartment.
I thought, I am so glad I do not live with a raging man.
Also, I would like to live elsewhere.
NOW
It would be perhaps a good way to slack off homework by eating cookies and reading hurricane updates.
Like what about the cookies from a can. That you bake on a sheet.
But I might not really want cookies. I mean, cookies aren't even my favorite indulgence, really.
Hmmm. I have to think this through carefully.
Another thing
Before I got to the less well-lit area, a woman handed me a card with some kind of website on it. It was about politics and progressivism, and people who want a change. She said it's for a lot of Bernie people, and it's people who don't want this ridiculous presidental election to happen again.
Well...I took it...but I was thinking that it's too bad more of the Bernie people weren't more attentive to gender equality and sexual discrimination and sexual harrassment which, as my walk home this evening proves, happens to young men too...NO Hillary wasn't perfect (Monica! Monica!) However, WOMEN who supported Bernie were under-attentive to those things.
Sorry, that's the impression I got...
I wasn't the only one...
OLD, but...
http://www.salon.com/2016/04/07/clintons_no_bunny_boiler_sanders_campaign_turns_to_80s_era_sexist_stereotypes_about_female_ambition_which_will_blow_up_in_his_face/
Anyway, that woman seemed nice, even though I have a feeling we weren't on the same page about some things. I fully intended to check out the website. But I was holding the card in my hand, and may have dropped it during the very unfortunate sexual harrassment street encounter.
~~~~

"Friends"?

I was walking back through the streets at night and I saw two teenage boys in a yard / garden area. They were kind of scuffling but standing up. I was like, hmmm, and I gave them a look but kept my distance. I actually thought I could hear a whisper, like "I'm so scared." And then they ran up the street along side me, past me. They ran back down and one yelled at me, "He's sexually harrassing me. Help me." I stopped and looked at them, as they kept running down the street. I really felt very unprepared. I also wondered if it was just a joke. I thought of teenage boys in my high school, joking about stuff like that. But I decided to act like it was not a joke to me. I managed to yell, "Well, then STOP IT!" And the one who hadn't yelled said to the one who had, "I'm not touching you!" But I watched them and they started to walk apart and then they were walking with a big space between each other, one walking behind the other. And I thought, if the one who yelled wants to get away, why is he still following that guy down the street? But I also thought, it could be complicated. Maybe they are "friends." To be honest, I instinctively did not want to be around them. But after they disappeared, I walked down a block to see if I could see them. Would I yell something else if I did? How involved did I want to get? It was not a well-lit street. But I did not see them. This was the first time something like that happened to me, and especially when walking home at night. I  know that it would be good to remember that teenage boys can get harrassed and I know it will be less of a surprise to me if it happens again.
