Petits films

A short film called 6ft. in 7 min.

A film about a prayer plant

This was not a night of wearing make up or anything special.

Apparently, sugar no longer makes you hyper, but it must have some jarring effect on body chemistry nonetheless. Why?

Why did "Rollin With the Homies" ever get stuck in my head?

A new orange flower

As (runs to the door) I (runs to the door) am (runs to the door!) rapidly doling out all the fruit punch flavored Nerds before starting on the orange ones, I have been searching for a picture of a pimpernel because last weekend I went over to a neighbor's place and ate their crushed Oreo dessert. These neighbors are very relaxed people who were carving pumpkins with friends on the front lawn. We talked about being in bit parts in musicals. (Me: The Sound of Music. Them: The Scarlet Pimpernel.)

Actually, it's orange!

That google doodle reminded me of an experience I had earlier this week. After waking up in the morning, I watched a film behind my eyelids. I had to half relax/half concentrate for it to happen. It was a short, soundless color film with simple animation. A little dog moved around and interacted with objects or maybe even other animals, but it's hard to remember. After a short time, it faded out, and the next thing I saw was a crudely drawn witch. She sat in front of a TV set. She started to jump up and down and open her mouth, as if screaming (in rage? I had to guess at that because there was no sound.) Then I couldn't keep the film rolling any longer. I opened my eyes. But it intrigued me. Where did that little film come from? It seemed as if it might actually exist somewhere...

Uncoverings

Some interesting but slightly confusing news stories about a da Vinci mural have been making it sound as if they've just discovered the room with a mural of mulberry trees, but it's not such a recent discovery...

"The first major study on Leonardo's fresco was by Luca Beltrami, published in 1902...He interpreted the fresco as both a commemoration of Beatrice d'Este and an exploration of Leonardo's personal interests in nature and interlaced designs."

"In 1981 Martin Kemp provided the first political reading of the iconography in the fresco. He interpreted the Sala delle Asse as a courtly fantasy that commemorated the dynastic union of the Sforza and Este families. The heavily rooted trees represented a personal symbol of the Duke and the gold interlaced rope represented one of Beatrice d'Este's favorite designs."

"The mulberry tree, as a personal impresa of the Duke, was rooted in the already established image of the black African Moor."

Oh God

Those Darlins – Oh God Lyrics I was a drunk girl in the shower In yet another shit hotel I could have been just anywhere The towel I held Well I was drying off my hair Both my feet and legs were bare My shirt was almost ripped in two That ragged shirt I wear to prove That mom and dad That mom and daddy’s love was true It was a picture that he drew It was the fabric that she made And every hole was one I earned I earned them holes A different city every day I earned them holes A different city every day Well after every toilet seat And every ash tray of a night The gas pump sidewalk sort of days I smell the fumes I smell them every single night It was a drunk and steamy shower You left a message on my phone When I pressed it to my ear I heard you whine Oh god I heard you whine and moan Well as I pressed it to my hear I could hear you whine and moan In a frantic voice you asked What have I done You said oh god what have I done

It's Sunday

The world is all like, b*****s be submissive & sexy or something! Reading NY Times review of Blue is the Warmest Color:

"Mr. Kechiche employs a selective aesthetic that shows Adèle slurping her food (“You’re voracious,” Emma says) but, importantly, does not permit her a similarly sloppy appetite in bed, where the movie’s carefully constructed realism is jettisoned along with bodily excesses and excretions in favor of tasteful, decorous poses. This may be what Ms. Maroh meant when she said the sex scenes were missing lesbians; I’d go further and say they’re missing women of any kind. Adèle’s hunger is contained, prettified, aestheticized."

~~~~~
"There’s a banality to how a lot of directors represent female bodies and female pleasure, partly because they borrow from the industrial handbook of male-oriented pornography.
In truth, it isn’t sex per se that makes “Blue Is the Warmest Color” problematic; it’s the patriarchal anxieties about sex, female appetite and maternity that leach into its sights and sounds and the way it frames, with scrutinizing closeness, the female body. In the logic of the movie, Adèle’s body is a mystery that needs solving and, for a brief while, it seems as if Emma will help solve it. In “The Second Sex,” Beauvoir wrote that “the erotic experience is one that most poignantly discloses to human beings the ambiguity of their condition; in it they are aware of themselves as flesh and spirit, as the other and as the subject.” This is the ideal, but for Adèle, the erotic experience leads to despair, desperation, isolation. The body betrays her — just like a woman."
Friday night/Saturday morning in the suburbs: The woman upstairs is entertaining a visitor. Loudly. Are they fighting or not? Snippets of conversation make it sound unfriendly but then there is laughter.
Man: I am NOT a WHITE GUY. My last name is GERMAN.
Woman: You are an ASSHOLE.
LOL!
Later they sound something like this:
Man: talking in a very low tone. Makes it sounds like he's reading off a script.
Woman: Ow. Oh. Ah. Auuuuuugh. Oh. Yes. Yes. YES! You're a GOOD BOY. AAAAAAAAAAAAH.
Recounting another interesting development later on:
A: So they were being really loud and she was screaming a lot. And it sounded like her sister stomped over and said "Shut the fuck up!"
B: Nice!
Next Day:
Concerned Father & Husband next door: Did you hear your upstairs neighbor last night? What was going on? We were outside and saw him pushing her up against the railing and she was saying "Ow, ow, you're hurting me."
Oh, name
Some neighbors just invited me to a little Halloween thing. I could not remember one of their names, so I desperately typed in the other one's name (and I only remembered it because it's the same unusual name as some kid I knew in Seattle.) Well, I didn't turn up my neighbor's name right away, but I accidentally found the kid's name. This kid used to tell me I should stay on a basketball team I left. He also wrote something rather lewd in a yearbook. Now he's a pastor with kids who has rejected his New Age upbringing in favor of Christianity. Of course. I know, I know, I KNOW religion will get me in trouble my whole entire life. I probably should stay in and do homework. No, I will go out and admire jack o'lanterns and eat a scary dessert made of Oreo cookie crumbs! Then I will return and do the homework...
Weaning
Seinfield ~ Kramer and his cane
Today I saw a nurse practitioner. Found out that my immobility over the past 2 months has resulted in weight gain. She made not unkind yet oddly pointed suggestions about obtaining health insurance and seeing a good endocrinologist. Have to decide between Medi-Cal (newly available to more people starting next year) or Obamacare. Also was noticing that it is extremely jarring when flower shops advertise blooms for funerals alongside any sort of sign with exclamation points!!! Dear mind that sees a media world fogged with mind-numbing superficiality, I feel fatigued. That is why I'm going to get these eyes outside to see some nature tomorrow as I wean myself off the cane.
Meanwhile, the internet tells me about interesting writers.
"I saw that look many, many times at the wedding and it was… hard to take. It crushed whatever shreds of confidence I had mustered. This isn’t in my head. This isn’t poor self-esteem. This is what comes from years of being the fat one in the gorgeous family. I know the look well. For so long I’ve never talked about this. I suppose we should keep our shames to ourselves, but I’m bored with that. Silence hasn’t worked out that well.
Or maybe this is someone else’s shame and I’m just being forced to carry it.
I added salt and pepper and began to stir the sauce, let it simmer. I really dig Italian food."
"It’s amazing how many narratives are driven by the image of a girl’s dead body, isn’t it? Where would network TV drama be without it? Sometimes the frequency, the simplicity, gets under my skin…The girl is usually barely developed as any more important than, say, the person who hands a drink out a fast food window."
Hail Mary
http://freethoughtblogs.com/pharyngula/2013/05/10/what-is-your-states-highest-paid-public-employee/
"For the most part, things in Maryville have returned to normal.
The high school football team is off to its usual dominant start, sporting a 7-0 record following Friday’s 50-10 win over Smithville. The college is preparing for its homecoming festivities, and the A&G Restaurant still fills up quickly on Sundays after church.
Many in town are happy to put the episode behind them, including White, who makes little attempt to mask his opinion of Coleman, a woman he says 'clearly has issues.'
'We did our job,' he says. 'We did it well. It’s unfortunate that they are unhappy.
'I guess they’re just going to have to get over it.'
Getting over it, it turns out, hasn’t proved all that easy.
Since that night in January, Daisy has been in regular therapy. She has been admitted to a Smithville hospital four times and spent 90 days at Missouri Girls Town, a residential facility for struggling teens.
Last May, shortly after returning home from college, Charlie found his sister collapsed in the family’s bathroom, where she had ingested a bottle of depression medication."
BoomBoomBoom (messages!)
So before I went to bed last night, I saw this Gloria Steinem quote.
And then I slept and woke up and went out into the world. In the car, I heard this: http://uprisingradio.org/home/2013/10/07/why-girls-halloween-costumes-are-so-sexualized-and-what-you-can-do-about-it/
And then right after that, the subversive thought of the day was the same Gloria Steinem quote!
Something about that was cheerful.
Halloween is coming! So far, I have been invited to two parties I cannot attend on the East Coast, and nothing on the West Coast. Even though I tend towards a level of introversion, the xx% of my personality that leans towards socializing was always happy to attend a fun Halloween party hosted by others, so I'm a little bit sorry about that. But maybe I shall use the time to bake pumpkiny things, or brood and stare into candles. Or investigate the holiday's pagan origins.
Colores
If something is frustrating to me, like for example, if someone I care for is not getting respected enough or is getting made fun of by older people who should (but somehow don't) seem to know better, I wonder, what's to be done? Better to turn the anger into love somehow, probably? Maybe the ones whose behavior looks so idiotic to me should go get a chakra healing? Well, it's a possibility.
