Teenage Girl Blossoming...

“Ashley used to be one of the brightest and best students in my class,” said Powell, recalling the former girl who once consisted of more than a single, surface-deep dimension. “But, wow, now you’d have to say that she’s something very special. Something very special indeed.”

Perplexing passage on ED

From a letter to the author:

"'Dickinson is the poet who means more and more to me as the years pass...Her poems think as they unfold--that's my dream! My hope is to understand her great art before I die.' When I jokingly suggested that his line stemmed from 'the seldom-mentioned Serbian side' of her family, Simic offered the following genealogy: 'I believe they were Russian. Came out of Dostoyevsky's rooming house for poor students. A family of anarchists who kept their children out of school. Taught them themselves. They read so much they all wore thick glasses by the time they were four years old. When they came to America they opened a delicatessen in Massachusetts. Miss Emily used to go there on the q.t. for gherkins. She thought she was pregnant. She was! With theology, poetry, and philosophy.'"

--Page 136, "Her Moment of Brocade...," Feeling As Foreign Language

This passage about Emily Dickinson puzzled me in my 20s and I still don't know if I get it (on the q.t. for gherkins?)

Sometimes you meet

a song, while walking very fast on a hiking trail, and it sounds like an Indian song, or a chant...then you stop and rest and a hiker passes by and the same voice (?) sings something that sounds like I am as he made me and it sounds more like gospel or opera.

Fun song

sent by a friend: Delaware

What did Mississip, boys,
What did Mississip?
What did Mississip, boys,
Through her pretty lips?
She sipped a Minna-soda,

I beg to differ

The first cover of Day of Honey (note some commentors' positive reactions to the cover's colors, etc.) does not (as stated here and here) look like the cover of a "Guideposts magazine."

Other thoughts:

- A little girl does not have to automatically signify "feeble" and "sentimental"
- Honey (and food) would not be possible without flowers

Walking is a joy

Today, near one of my walking places, I noticed a dilapidated car filled with trash with a sign in the window that said "GREECE ME BABY" or something like that. It was a sight. I also felt like looking at a book about El Camino (not the car! the one in Spain) and this part sort of jumped out:

"A Belgian hiker stopped me and said I had been his older sister in a past life. It was probably true. He was carrying a baseball bat and some larger contraption that he said would paralyze any dogs or people who might attack him...I told him it was better to walk alone quietly. He asked me to bless him. That made me extremely uncomfortable." --Page 140 of El Camino

I also read something about how the author's daughter might be writing a "tell-all" book about what it was like to be raised by her, and thought, hopefully, there will be some funny parts...it seems to me that life can only get better if you have a sense of humor about the way your guardians handled you; otherwise, it simply makes things much worse for yourself...unless, of course, you really had an upbringing that felt equivalent to that of a child opium bride...

Intriguing

I Died For Beauty story, birthday cake, tequila shot, yoga cat calender, saw Brave and Girls win some stuff on TV, time to annotate part of A Thousand Pieces of Gold and do laundry...

Probably kind of weird but...

This scene with Lucy Liu reminds me of how, when some people do that AA "higher power" stuff, some might deal with the Bible, some might think of the ocean, and some might listen to an Orin meditation...

Entertainment for le weekend

A bit of absurdity: White House Death Star & Miss America has been crowned. Look at the people she beat. Those "Ali" names are very popular. Almost as popular as blond hair! Just kidding... I thought about going out to watch a movie last night, but I think that after the sword-fighting women in Kill Bill (Vol. 1 & Vol. 2), the main female character in Django Unchained would be so anti-climatic...maybe I'd rather watch Jackie Brown...I noticed that recently the director looked really stressed out in one of his interviews...maybe he needs to go to a spa...I stayed in and watched A Single Man (featuring Vasquez Rocks! And Colin Firth!) instead. "Blondes are a minority." Also a friend just sent me this: Man Has Alarming Level of Pride...

Pizza dreams

Supposedly, there something special about the water
I just found out I may get a chance to eat out this weekend... this place is supposed to have pretty good pizza. Pizza is a dish that I never really try to make at home. But why not? It could be fun. When I moved to the West Coast, I found out that there are alternative ways of composing a pizza crust (like with cornmeal) but until I watched this I had not known that a person could put grits in pizza crust, too! But what do you know? Apparently, you can. Indian Pizza with grits.

Musical person to like today

Unpretty?

Found a rap when I was feeling incensed about the Steubenville video and also about a picture of the president with this guy holding up the "Obama 1" t-shirt. Some of the rap goes like this:

Haters say look how she was dressed
But I didn't look my best
My uniform was a mess
I looked like a Denny's waitress
(Chicken Fried Steak y'all)

 -- A Rap by somebody

So sports fan cowards, I would like to know your opinion. Why are so many of these sports hero dudes either a) being persecuted by being falsely accused of rape by hysterical hot women or b) actually raping people and you do not seem to care? Why? Why is it that you do not care? Is it too much to ask that you care? Is it because it's not your daughter that you don't care? Is the topic too uncomfortable for you? I just want to know. Why do you not care? Why not? I'm feeling really curious. Why don't you care?

The writer who posted the rap video says:

"This video only confirms she was looking for easy cash. What rape victim gets on stage smiling and rapping about being raped? Wow. Girl is psychotic."

How do you know that? Is there some certain way that all rape victims are supposed to act? Especially if it's five years after the fact? Is she still supposed to be cowering and crying in a dark corner five years later?

For our president to pose for such a photo, with a person of such questionable character, with such a self-congratulatory message on that shirt, is a disgrace and a betrayal.

This photo caught our president at a very weak moment.

I think that photo proves that our president is capable of being a very weak leader.

Purple wafers taste like cloves

I heard the funny food episode on Wait Wait... on Saturday. Originally, I started writing a satirical little story in my head, which centered on the image of a high school girl walking backwards and pitching purple wafers at her neighbor's car while singing the "Why Can't We Be Friends" song, and if he deigned to so much as even throw a glance or a scowl in her direction, she'd say, "What, does my behavior offend you or something? I'll have you know, this is considered a charming custom in the kingdom VISIONQUESTLANDIA on the planet where I come from!" And P.S. What on earth is the artist on this album cover doing to that car? And I would crack myself up, at least a little bit. But then real life intervened and people had to go to the hospital again and I just didn't feel like being so flippant/funny about anything for the time being. Oh well. C'est tragic. That is life sometimes.

By the way, as I was composing this little tragedy, the person I live with walked into the room and felt the need to share a variation of the "Always Keep Your Condoms..." story.

Steubenville

On Internet...

I didn't read everything all the way, though.
I am of the opinion that there is a really big problem in our society.

With regard to the first post about Steubenville, that infamous video can make a person numb. It's awful. There's references to celebrities...I'm surprised he didn't manage to reference Mr. I hold up an Obama #1 shirt at the White House. I think that when the president of our country and father of two daughters is that proud of himself for standing by someone who features prominently in this piece on sexual assault, it indicates we have a culture of denial. IMMENSE DENIAL. If I was his wife, I think I would divorce him. I'm sure that some people in the powers that be can change the way this stuff is dealt with in sports culture. Which many women enjoy, by the way, IN SPITE of the flagrant disrespect for women that mars it.  Datin Communication, Respect, & Sexual Assault AwarenessDating, Communication, Respect, & Sexual Assault Awareness

Dark letter

This is a gloomy article to read in the morning. What is this about:  "Police have said the accused have admitted to torturing and raping the student 'to teach her a lesson.'" What kind of lesson? Seriously, WHAT KIND OF LESSON.

Dear Somebody, like maybe somebody in Hollywood who secretly wants this sort of letter written to you.

One time when I was in college and living in a dorm, this knucklehead got drunk and then decided that it would be fun to repeatedly RAM his skateboard into my door at three in the morning. I got very tired of this, and so I finally got up and opened the door and said something that was SO unfriendly, like "Will you PLEASE shut up now!" and then slammed my door. He yelled "Go back to bed yourself, you bitch!" and stomped down the hallway. But a girl in his group of friends walked him to my door and made him apologize to me. She had her arm around his shoulders and she gave me a LOOK when this happened, like "just accept his apology already." Fine, I accept that she made you say you were sorry. Now I am going back to sleep. Anyway. The next day it was the biggest joke ever. Marauding bands of boys could not stop repeating the story and loudly laughing about it, while I stayed in my room and avoided them.

Now, I know that this is probably a really excessive and gruesome comparison, but sometimes I wonder if this is the same kind of mean laughter that goes on when some young dumb GIs decide it would be fun to make an underage girl have sex with them on a military base, or a group of stupid frat boys tell themselves it's cool to slip roofies into the punch, or a bunch of soldiers feel like going out and attacking someone (maybe even each other?) And isn't it sad how much of this goes on in the world? Meanwhile, there you sit, writing or directing or producing or costuming or whatevering for a certain kind of actress who has to mold herself to conform to certain weight & height & behavioral standards to satiate some kind of socially acceptable and ultimately PURITANICAL sexual appetite. You know what? I think that female dominatrixes exist to launder your dirty money. I suggest you go out and employ one for her services. It's likely that she'd do you a world of good.

I guess that's it for now, and I think I'm going to go back to reading something nice like Hot Chocolate For The Mystical Soul, at least for the moment (not for forever) so PEACE OUT!

Words, pictures, quotes, etc.

Guido! Don't send us upstairs when we're old!

So, 8 1/2 is available for instant viewing on Netflix.
It is at least as entertaining as Nine.
And it has a wider variety of body types for the actresses.
I was wondering what would happen if there was a gender reversal of the director's character. Then I thought to look at this person's gallery, and I was very surprised to discover that it was not easy to find a picture of her brandishing a whip.
I wonder how Guido in 8 1/2 is like Leopold Bloom?
(The hero of Ulysses, which I still have not read...)
