Ailingness

At a tea shop the other day, I got sucked in by the magazine rack.

http://press.nationalgeographic.com/2015/11/09/national-geographic-magazine-december-2015/

http://www.nylon.com/magazine

This is an attractive cover, but honestly, does this girl look like she's up for saving people? It kind of looks like the other way around. I thought this interview with someone named Tinashe was interesting (she makes music, she loves solitude...)

~~~~~
I had a dream a friend of mine was very sick and I worried if it was an illness or morning sickness. Honestly, sometimes I do feel bad for ranting about pcos / cult of motherhood resentment, and the idea that "what if she was having a problem or pregnancy-related issue, would she avoid telling me about it" made me feel kind of small...likewise, if she had some kind of problem with bulimia or something. How do you be honest about what you are going through in a way that does not come back and bite you? These are things you may wrestle with in an all girls dorm at college but the situations change continuously.
~~~~~

I looked up Tinashe. That "Player" video with Chris Brown? Um, he keeps making weird facial expressions that kind of gross me out...

Ha ha: "Do you have the mushroom fungus in your cornfield?"

Only the men whistle.

(Did any women or girls ever? In secret?)

I wonder what would have happened if one of them had been a female anthropologist.

I'm a workaholic! Omg you're an amazing human being. I have a binging disorder! Omg that's so sad. I make electronics and live in a factory dorm! What, you exist??

Tsundoku!

TV wasn't the thing tonight, apparently. But I learned this new word. Who knows. Maybe I will become all about reading and my own ways of being active. It could happen to me.

Saturday Night's Alright For Shopping

I was in line behind a little boy and his parents. The little boy kept holding up a box of candy and saying, "Mom, I want to get this for your mom for Christmas!"

Then he'd wait to see if she reacted.

Mom was not interested in his behavior. She was talking to the man about other topics.

The boy tried this four or five times and then she stopped and looked at him. I waited to see if she'd just say, "Oh that's a nice thought" or something. But she did not say anything of the sort.

She just went back to talking to the man.

The boy said it two more times, then gave up. He went and got another box of candy.

"I want to buy this for Christmas!"

He said it once, then put it back. They obviously were not interested in him. I was thinking to myself, "I know I've read those articles where they say the kids actually benefit more if the parents put their relationship first, but, ugh."

The boy went away from the parents and stood next to a sign.

He was there for a few minutes, when the man said, "Stop that. You're going to knock over the sign."

And then mom scolded him. He came and stood next to her.

"Quit pulling on me!" she hissed.

Then the man yanked him by the back of the neck of his hoodie. It was uncomfortable. The boy's eyes bulged.

"Let's go outside."

They left. I was tempted to inquire, "Ma'am, is your child the product of an unwanted pregnancy?" But I didn't. That would have been very bitchy.

Anyways.

Maybe this is why the world needs aunties sometimes?

Body weirdness

It has been less than 12 hours since I took my measly half dose of Metformin. I have not dieted at all today, except for refraining from putting cheese on a sandwich. In particular, I ate a ton of sunflower seed butter on apple slices. My jeans feel loose, almost as if I should trade them in for a smaller pair at home. I am surprised.

Society and genetics are unfair. Remember that next time you see a girl in a coffee shop simpering over a man in uniform.

"They called it 'banana oil.' Long Li didn't ask what was in it. All she knew was that she was supposed to use it to clean cell phone screens, hundreds of them every hour. Fumes filled the air in the windowless room where she worked, in a three-story factory outside the southeastern China city of Dongguan."

"One of the individuals that White follows in her upcoming film did commit suicide in January 2014 after receiving a terminal diagnosis. And this problem isn’t just isolated at Apple facilities, either.

'While I was [in China,] I actually heard many cases in other factories where workers were committing suicide,” she says. “I think it’s a fairly widespread problem, either from the pressure or from finding out that they have a terminal diagnosis of something like Leukemia.'”

It’s hard not to look at the nets. Every building is skirted in them. They drape every precipice, steel poles jutting out 20 feet above the sidewalk, loosely tangled like volleyball nets in winter.

"The women never suggested a boycott, though, and a lack of consequences with teeth surely did not help their effort. FIFA and tournament organizers merely ran out the clock, and in the end everyone just agreed to get on with it.

But on Sunday the players stood their ground. And U.S. Soccer not only listened to their concerns but made clear it was doing something to address them.

None of the women’s international games set to be hosted by U.S. Soccer in 2016 will be played on artificial turf, said Neil Buethe, a spokesman for the federation. That includes a four-team tournament the Americans will host early next year in place of their regular trip to the Algarve Cup in Portugal, and any matches before the Olympics, where FIFA has again insisted on natural grass — because the men will be playing in the same stadiums as the women."

In charge of le monde

If it were up to me, I would not let attractive slender girls laugh nervously as they inquire about your prescription before they hand it over and then recite its worst side effects, but I am not God. Nor do I run Hollywood. So there it is. In lieu of the "shrug" emoji:

and this oldie:

The End of the World

Likes

Crouching over a kitchen sink, staring out the window at green leaves and feeling all this warm water pouring out of the kitchen faucet, all over your hands.

That is very nice.

Now, I think my pint-of-icecream binge deserves a full body shower.

I'm very happy the property manager fixed whatever was going on with the water heater.

Dessert

The ice cream is almost gone.
I'm not suffering any major side effects.

Very, very interesting

Don't know if I would be able to submit anything but would definitely be interested in reading this anthology: Not That Bad: Dispatches From Rape Culture (nice to see it also includes "What it’s like to negotiate rape culture as a man.")

M

is for Metformin.

I haven't been keen on taking medication. Well, perhaps thanks in part to a costly traffic ticket (making me consider that pursing Chinese Medicine, Berberine, etc. is not so cost-effective)  I am now in possession of these pills which insurance covers.

What are you taking it for? asked the women behind the counter. That's what I thought...she laughed...that's what I thought...it will (she listed off the unpleasant side effects) but it's a low dosage, she added. She was so positive about the side effects. I mean, she didn't say, it might. She said it will. When I brought up those side effects to the doctor (the only one she'd mentioned was weightloss) she told me I could take a 1/2 or 1/4 pill and she said it makes a difference what you eat and to stay away from dairy and fattening things it will not be as bad. You could try that, said the pharmacist, a slender women who looked to me like she was zero percent a candidate for PCOS. But then, that's also true of Mrs. Beckham and others.

Whereforartthou, fund for TCM, Berberine, etc.?

Oh, also, the nice thing about this treatment is, since it's not hormones if you miss a dose, it's not that bad, it doesn't make you start hemorrhaging or anything, the doctor said wryly.

Yeah, that's good!

So I bought beer-flavored ice cream. I will take the pill (or 1/2, or 1/4) tomorrow.

The ice cream is very creamy. Instead of beer, it reminds me of a toasted English muffin.

Welcome to the world, my child, you will grow up to write about menstruation, weightloss, and other assorted topics. Maybe some of the men in Hollywood who help enforce the culture of women should look like they're under 35 and wear a size 2 will read about them.
Don't some of those guys have sisters anyways?

I still find this to be interesting:

"Ironically, PCOS displays certain characteristics which suggest it evolved in the past as a means of maintaining fertility. 'In times of famine, women with a tendency to obesity preserve the population by maintaining fertility, while those of normal body weight fall below the threshold body weight at which they can have periods,'" explains consultant gynaecologist Adam Balen.

As a man

I am not a cop. I am an outsider. My childhood was tough and I am talented and now I've worked my way to the top so it is time to acquire a Jewish girlfriend whose dad owns a big department store...nevermind, that's just from Season One of Mad Men.

Pico

Yesterday a girl who did not love her job and did not want to wait on me served me food and I was being very grateful but then there was the 3 toppings on the 1/2 burrito bowl part and she said they had pico de gallo but it was scraping the very bottom and she gave me the tiniest scoop and I was like I am sorry can I get a little more and she gave me another tiny scoop and then the rest and then I said I am sorry can I get just a little more pico and then she said "we do this because of portion sizes" and I said oh, well I guess they usually just give me a little bit more than that and she said "well they shouldn't!" And then I said, well I think it's because the amount of pico in the container is so low, when its full then you just naturally get more out of one scoop! And she smiled stiffly and said "Your total will be..."

Also, I found this Interesting Link to a story on Dolls and Feelings from here.

Also, I got to work on a personal project.

I wish they were available in local grocery store
(instead of just the wheat grass).

For some reason I couldn't use any of my cards at a parking meter today. I also didn't have enough change. This guy with glasses who was really happy with his girlfriend offered me some change. It still wasn't enough. I literally had to get just one more dime to pay for my parking. (I felt like I had an old Golden Girls "Brother Can You Spare A Dime?" episode running through my head.) I offered to trade another girl a fifty cent piece for one dime and the happy guy saw me and he insisted on using his credit card (which worked!!!! Why didn't mine?) at the machine and he waved off any of my attempts to give him back any of his change. In short, you may be surprised by the generosity of people you meet in a parking garage.

She also recommends a lot of other stuff.
Maybe I should go back for a massage soon...

It's kind of too bad, I sometimes think, that the literary/art worlds and the alternative healing medicine worlds aren't more connected!

I mean, most of your allopathic doctors aren't going to recommend them to you. They just aren't.

evening meanderings

I went out. God, I am lucky to live in a place where I feel it's relatively safe to walk around at night and the neighborhoods are interesting, too. I went by the old place and saw the cat. The street was blocked off and full of emergency vehicles. I petted her in the glare of all those blinking lights. At the coffee shop, I zoned out and stayed 15 minutes past closing time. For some reason, they did not kick me out. I went by the old place again. The cat was gone. I spoke to the one of the people she lives with, a marathon-runner. I have had an image in my head of a marathon runner. Either very thin, or fit in a stocky way (like my father) but she's female  and shorter and has wider hips and I wouldn't be surprised if we wore almost the same size. I'd think if I trained for a marathon I'd lose more weight, but I guess I don't really know. Her roommate who doesn't run marathons is thinner, actually. What is the secret of genetics? What makes some people want to run marathons and others not want to? Maybe I'd be interested in a yoga/meditation marathon. Also I was thinking about something else. Hollywood is run by men, and it is high schoolish in that it seems to mostly like women to be "hot in a certain way" and also "kind of submissive." (This is changing, a bit.) Well. It's not that I've never experienced a kind of appreciation of submissiveness in love. "I am so happy because you are happy! You're happiness is my happiness!" But then, it's as if the universe put a soldier inside of me and the soldier always gets out. The soldier got called "that feminist chick" at a conservative high school. And then there's a shy person who doesn't want to attract attention and that person took over for quite a while and the soldier is somewhat tolerant of the shy person but after a certain point...the soldier says "enough is enough." If I think about it, I'm not surprised that when I went searching for a lost relative I found a dominatrix. But...the problem with the soldier is that...the soldier is not enough for my creative side. My creative side says it's important to be more nurturing and open, and it is interested in motherly femininity. That is something that is not so easy for the soldier to figure out.

Is that right

Did you get locked out of an office building.
Maybe you will go to a yoga class...

AA and A

Almost Adult and Adolescent.
In which the universe annoyingly acts like you're not allowed to be flippant and sends you images like...you run to get into an office building but the doors all simultaneously lock up and the lights go off. Just for you. That is interesting.

The movie he raves about: Like Water For Chocolate
