I personally don't find this to be very practical advice, considering all the people who are getting kidnapped by masked men these days.
It's like saying, do you really think you're special enough to have an act of violence happen to you? Yes, lots of people are special enough to have had acts of violence happen against them, so I don't think that this advice would work very well with a lot of people.
But I guess if it worked for her mom, it worked for her.
