"It's been adapted by Zoe Kazan, who spoke of her wish to approach the source material in as 'personal' a way as the original author, John Steinbeck, did. And that's the thing about historical fiction; texts written long ago, at a time and place we no longer have any real comprehension of, can still speak to us on a visceral, relatable level.
For Kazan, there's a very specific and unique connection. The 1955 film adaptation of East of Eden, perhaps the most famous on-screen depiction of the story starring the late Hollywood icon James Dean, was directed by her grandfather Elia Kazan."
