I think when the Nazis took over Germany and other European countries, they were enacting ruthlessly patriarchal values out of fear and a desire to control, and it backfired very badly eventually.
But for a little while, it felt like it was normal to a lot of people to just ignore that some people were treating being treated a lot worse than others.
And many of those people felt that they needed to get away from being treated badly themselves. So going along with the program was the best way for them to do that. Well, I think that's what a lot of them thought.
