Fun Summer Song

This Time I Know It's For Real

"Sorry, I have to listen to this again. Is it going to bother you?"

"I've tuned you out."

"Cool."

Saturday is...

Sitting on the couch listening to The Battle of Evermore while someone else plays WOW before going to the beach (with his friends that work at Blizzard? No, actually, those people had to cancel.)
Also today--a little boy burst out laughing after reading a story about Mary Anning.

Yes, a girl.

Sigh freaking sigh

Toothache = buzz kill.
Actually, anything pain-related.
Life is not fair.
And it is expensive.
Let me figure something out.
First, go get some ibuprofen.

The human body is perplexing

"But really the human body is more like a tree. It's permeable; it bleeds..."
Florence Williams (author of Breasts: A Natural and Unnatural History) on Fresh Air today.
They talked about household plastics and contaminated water at the Camp Lejeune Marine Base.
It was on the radio after I went for a walk. I saw trees and many scampering lizards.

Doing tolerable well

I think it would be fun to go to Disneyland today.
But what must I do? Sweep and clean the floor.
Oh well...maybe another day...

agapeness

Rocky Raccoon

Black and White?

Color?

I have to go get some work done.

How one hears things

So I did something with the blending mode in Photoshop and now I just cannot get Hotel out of my head. I thought (erroneously) that she sings "Multipy" over and over again. Apparently not! I also did not know that the words "Lollipop Gestapo" were in that song...interesting...

Exactly what I need...

In The Morning

While dressing, forgot that the bedroom door was open.

(Which is really no big deal, since there’s a shielding wall between the doorway and the vanity area, and only needed to put on a t-shirt anyways.)

Question: “Is our roommate home?”

Answer: “I don’t know.”

Reply: “I’m surprised at your openness.”

Stop. Put the bottle of tea tree oil down on the counter. Feet go padding softly across the floor.

“I don’t mind…”

The door clicks shut.

More bird thoughts

I quite admire Pieces of Margo's admiration for her parrot.

I like this song: "Fly my Brazilian lovebird..." I mean, Brazilian Lovesong by Nat King Cole and Bebel Gilberto.

If you ever want to move to a place where you could get dive-bombed by hummingbirds, California/Los Angeles is the place...

Lola!

So, for some reason, I just decided that I felt like listening to Lola. Which is also the song that makes me think of pot-smoking high school kids on an island in the Pacific Northwest in the '90s. And then of course, I had to think about the Lola that made the biggest impression on my life...

Lola was an Amazon parrot. She was in love with a guy I went out with who was a rainforest guide. He used to catch baby caimans and he knew all sorts of bird calls...also, he'd climb the vines up giant kapok trees. When I worked in a warehouse job one summer (wrapping ties and trinkets for the Smithsonian magazine) I talked about him, and the boys I worked with guffawed and called him "Tarzan." So insensitive. Anyways, Lola was a smart parrot with a scary beak. She stole the key to my room and wouldn't give it back to me. But why was her attitude towards me so bizarre? I guess she felt competitive or something...

Aw, two Lolas...

Not long ago, the ex from Peru wrote and asked if I'd ever move back. He pointed out how great the food is down there. True, but alas, I am not as money'd as I was in my youth...

Fly, Lola, fly....

(Pics from Walls of the Wild, Scarlet Macaw Petshop, and a travel blog.)

On the other hand...

Little kids have some pretty cool insights.
So do teenagers.
And even some people in their twenties.
I guess it all just depends....

Youth...

Youth is very popular.
Youth can be overrated.
I think I'll remember to seek the wisdom of my elders.
I'm so grateful to have found a cure to my addiction to people telling me I look youthful, 'cause I know that won't last forever!

I would like...

It could be a long tattoo...

Oh God, now there's more bad news about health insurance and not being able to pay for surgery. Well, even though it may not being rioting in the streets over tortillas, it's not exactly a joke either.

No, I don't think that would make a very good tattoo. A different kind of poem or a picture would be much better.

This is one useful sentence

And I want it to stick in my head.
Money flows towards the writer.

Hurricanes

Hopefully hurricanes won't hit the East Coast this summer.
I might go to South Carolina. First time leaving Cali in 2 years.
My gypsyish immediate family members move around a lot.
Sometimes I think it would have been nice to live in one place.
More stability. Less neurosis.
I used to draw a lot of tornado clouds in margins.

Good Stones song

Wild Horses

16 going on 17...

This is a revise of a delightful Rodgers and Hammerstein tune that I used to sort of plunk around on the piano:
Sixteen Going On Seventeen
This is from the Sound of Music soundtrack:
Sixteen Going On Seventeen

72 cheers for molasses and brown sugar

molasses is in some tori amos songs
and brown sugar is in moravian sugar cake
i thought molasses would be in that cake too
it's not though
the rolling stones sing something about brown sugar
it's hard to be very clever right now
dialogue from the boiler room (movie) is fracturing the atmosphere
and i have to do some work
so anyway
there is no molasses in moravian sugar cake

3 songs

There were 3 songs that got stuck in my head today:
Everybody Wants To Rule The World
(it was playing in the 99 cent store)
You're Not Alone
(a family member with a messed up health/insurance/financial situation likes that song)
Kiss Off
(it was playing in the car on the way home)
There really should have been a fourth one about money....

I love this:

[Then there is this dream with its other bright edges]

I feel like reading that after watching some of the Miley Cyrus "Part of Your World" song was kind of like mashing together two cakes--one of the four-year-old mind, and one of the adult mind. (Even though The Little Mermaid came out when I was twelve.) I have to go to the beach soon....

I hearted Ren Fair

And I shall look at the pictures when the raspberry cider headache wears off.
I love it when people do a double take after they ask for my I.D.
"What's the matter, does my age shock you?"
"Yes!"
"How old did you think I was?"
"Not that old."
Thanks! Please let that last for at least another decade, or until I no longer care...

How sad

This is very lame. Lesbian Woman Arrested...
And in the exact town where half my family is from, too.
That is like, dumping creamers and sugar bowls over peoples' heads lame.
Maybe later I'll dig up an old picture of me and my prom date.

And a kid's book to reread....

Noisy Nora!
Haven't read that in ages...
Well, now you don't even have to. There's the video.
This is not Noisy Nora, but sock puppets:
The Nora Song

Children's book to read...

I want to read In The Night Kitchen. I never read it. I love that title.

Interesting quotes:

"Sendak's own childhood, like the ones he portrayed in his books, was fraught with peril, isolation and fear. It's appalling but not surprising that many adults have found his vision of childhood alarming and want to keep it from their innocent babes. Sendak's "In the Night Kitchen" is 25th on the American Library Assn.'s list of most frequently banned or challenged books".
(from Sendak Lives On...LA Times)

"His linework was elegant, sometimes even cute, but always honest. He was wise, and he never patronised any readers, adult or child. I devoured interviews with Sendak: he was a grumpy, Jewish, brilliant, wise contrarian and he didn't mellow as he aged. But then, he had never created mellow books. His coming out in 2008, age 80, was a final act of honesty.

Something Sendak once said is the epigraph of my next book. "I remember my own childhood vividly." he explained. "I knew terrible things. But I knew I mustn't let adults know I knew. It would scare them.""
(from My Hero...The Guardian)

Happy Ren Fair Day

That will be today!
Another happy thing is the prospect of employment this summer.
Who knows, if this keeps up, I might even have enough money to eventually have a cat!
Such as back when I actually made a living wage.

The guy in The Laughing Song

does look like Ben Franklin.

(Pics from Sodahead and Pharos games)

I wish I made this

From Sublimating rage through arts and crafts again.

The song Sunrise, Sunset by Bright Eyes sounded strangely lulling in the evening.

Bus conversations so old

1) REALLY, REALLY OLD...LIKE, BEFORE EVERYONE HAD INTERNET AND CELL PHONES
Ella: Why don't you do your art homework? You know, they said in class that Muhammed is against art in the Koran. El: I don't feel like it. Yes, and he was right! Ella: Oh come on, you don't believe that! You should do your homework!
(Who can beat that with a stick?)
2) EVEN OLDER - Ella: So are you going back to your country someday? El: Yes, of course. Ella: I want you to remember my name. El: Why? Ella: So then if you are somewhere in the world you can find me. But the way that my name is spelled is really weird, so this is how you spell it...will you remember it? El: Okay. Ella: I want you to spell it...

Fun little discoveries

I discovered a twitter hash mark poem!
It is fun to discover things after you wonder about them.
Are there poems/artsy things about religious people in the military?
I found a video about being Muslim in the Marine Corps.
That guy seems fairly amiable.

Chickens

I quite liked this post: Three Cheers For Chickens!
Perhaps in my life I have not properly assessed the attractiveness of chickens.

Tsk!

What the heck. "Are You Mom Enough." I've heard about this from friends with kids. The breast feeding wars in internet chatrooms. Whatever. Society is always trying to pit women against enough other in one way or another. Isn't it disgusting? And also, BOOOO about the gay marriage thing in North Carolina. I have family in that state. I have a cousin whose name is the same as "a traditional small cake from Commercy and Liverdun, two communes of the Lorraine region in northeastern France." Perhaps she will follow in the footsteps of other family members by attending the wondrous Wake Forest...

Bert The Pavement Artist

art class - elementary school

There was the ugly poster I wanted to hide. I won a trophy for it. I was shocked when I received applause from an auditorium full of people after I came in late (because of throwing up on myself in the car coming back from West Point.) There was a clay elephant sculpture that got put in the hallway display case. (That was more of a pleasant and tranquil experience.) When there was a newspaper article about an elephant figurine uncovered on an archaeological dig, grown-ups compared my little sculpture to the artifact. But then, there was the visiting art teacher. I wanted very badly to impress her. She had us draw a tricycle. I tried; I couldn't do it, and I cried. But on another day, she told us to draw a monster. I had been happy with the elephant sculpture, so I drew an elephant-looking Snuffleupagus kind of creature. But this did not impress her. I didn't know why...the class artist was always making something good (she grew up and became a writer) but I don't remember what she drew. I think some kid (named Paul?) drew the teacher's favorite monster. And, because my elephant monster was so forgettable that it wasn't even hung up on the wall with the rest of the class's art work, I always remembered how she raved over his very geometric monster. It was a triangle monster. In my memory, it hung in the most prized position on the wall, and it mocked me.

What should I do with all these people?

Beatrice and Dante and Thomas Becket and Ben Franklin and Christine de Pizan and Elisabetta Sirani etc., etc., etc....

Because on occasion

I can be susceptible to some kinds of old stories, dreams, etc.
What was burdensome can flip flop itself in a strange way.
I imagine some old parts of myself would like to die/get reborn.

a cat so clever as Magical Mr. Mistoffelees!
that version is rather fun

I confess, I miss having a cat. Not enough money to have a pet right now. Suppose cat gets very sick? Wouldn't want to not be able to pay vet bills...

Grammar Conundrum

Someday, perhaps I shall be able to explain why it makes sense to write"should be avoided" and not "should be avoid."
That happy day was not today, however.
Frack, English is a hard language

comedy trickles in

from another room...someone is watching "Kevin Smith: Burn In Hell," and he (mr. Smith) is talking about people holding up some protest signs. Some homophobes hold up ones that say "God hates fags." Some highschoolers hold up ones that say "God hates homework." And his favorite, which is a sign that says, "Why did God cancel Pushing Daisies?" triggers a memory of when I worked at a restaurant and a young server came up to me and earnestly went into the plot of a show about people who loved each other but couldn't touch each other (because...then they'd kill each other!) Why on earth is this girl so intense about explaining this show to me??? I remember thinking....

Wednesday...

I am so excited that Wednesday is coming up...that's when I hopefully get to use a $10 coupon on a pair of sandals! The strap on my only pair broke yesterday...ever since I moved out here I own about 6 pairs of shoes and wear 3 regularly. One of those pairs was given to me...

places

I haven't traveled about as much as I thought I would have at this stage of life. But I've lived in various places. So, the first place I felt loyal to as a kid was New York. I didn't live in NYC but when I visited, something about it had a very familiar vibe. Some old friends of mine have moved there and lived there extensively. I never have, but I thought about it.

One friend who took some pictures of me when we were much younger lives in NYC...she's got some of her creative work online...I think this is her husband, who I met once, a really long time ago. I would like to go to the Phillippines and Ireland sometime...

Another old friend of mine who has been to those countries also lives in New York. She has a poem online which is set on an island, which is also where we first met: Out Of The Marram Grass. And I think there are Homer references in that poem...

Cheery thought

Sometimes horns sound really good! Like in Cake songs. Such as, Friend Is A Four Letter Word. It's possible that the highway in that video, with it's weird structural building, looks a bit familiar...sometimes living in this place is odd for one who did not grow up here...you think you are used to palm trees, for example, but then after you have a strong margarita they look all special and exotic again...Not that that happening now! Ha, I wish. (Well sort of. I'm not sure if I think alcohol is the greatest thing or if it's a little bit like poison?) That was happening another day. Un-Cinco de Mayo. Possible goal for a future life: learn to play a horn instrument really well.

songz to sing

I looked at this angel bear and clicked on the Madonna song.
The Power of Goodbye video is actually little bit funny. Well, maybe it was because I watched it on a super old laptop and the video kept pausing when the people had the goofiest expressions on their faces...
I sang along to Northern Lad after coming back from the library. It was cathartic. Especially the last part, like:
I feel the west in you
but I, I feel it falling apart too
and don't say that you don't
And if you could see me now
said if you could see me now
girls you've got to know
when it's time to turn the page
when you're only wet, because of the rain

which you can sing with your mouth quite wide open as you're driving and trying to get your voice to come up from the pit of your stomach...
BECAUSE OF THE RAIN
oh and also is this connected?
strange post about goddesses in clouds and baking a cake
and the lyric "I feel this cake just isn't done."
It could be interesting to hear another singer's cover of it.
I corrected a grammatical error ("your" to "you're") in the lyrics...

A comic returns

Yesterday, someone asked me to help him write about this:
(That's from "The Veil" in Persepolis.)

Water

Last Call At The Oasis
Read about a new documentary that opens today
Erin Brockovich returns...

Came to mind...

Old Nat'l Geographic cover & America - Sister Golden Hair

noteworthy

Apparently, this got "a ridiculous amount of coverage" in the press yesterday:
Mama bear, two cubs
This was rather interesting:
Blond hair evolved separately in Europe and the South Pacific
The Supermoon is going to be on Cinco de Mayo.

Way too late for National Haiku Day

Hmmm. It's the anniversary of Kent State.
But that's not why this haiku came to me:

I'm tired of living
I think I'll die; just kidding
metaphorically.

I think my friend who made a cross-stitch of Resume to hang on her wall might like it.

TV (actually, computer monitor) watching

Saw some episodes of Portlandia today. Cacao Episode 2 and Episode 3 amused me, maybe because, by coincidence, I had to watch a sex talk as part of my job today. The presenter said she was "passionate about STDs!" and gave away condoms in shiny red foil wrappers with the word "LOVE" imprinted on them. And, they called them "Chocolates!" They always give these talks to students, but, they never do ethical talks. Like about bigamy, for example. What if that is just boring in the future? Oh ho-hum. There are those bigamists buying organic carrots at the grocery store. How vanilla. Cleaning Lady was also amusing. However, the thing they did to the Tori Amos CD was a bit painful to watch...

Some interesting bees things

The randomly collecting a wild swarm of bees was a fun photo essay. Listened to Beekeeper Live. Kind of want to check out works by Sue Hubbell again.

Way Better Than Work

Slacking off to read stuff that's not work-related! I enjoyed perusing Prose; pop! That writer really likes She's Your Cocaine. He wrote about it twice. Also, I looked at the Pieces of Margo blog again. Recently, instead of posting pictures of all the scars she gets from men beating her, she was all about gardens and the Cloisters museum. Very interesting. (I always wanted to go there.) I heart New York ;-) Speaking of work, I think I heard something on NPR today at about a 26-year-old who makes an actual living by picking out youtube video clips!? I guess someone has to do it. I could be jealous...

Yosemite...

Haven't been able to afford to travel much in the last few years but I really should see this place: Yosemite Range of Light

Sew....

So, once again I was thinking about how "House of the Rising Sun" was originally about a girl, but The Animals' version is most famous. That singer looks so young! His voice makes me picture a much older person.
"My mother was a tailor
she sewed my new blue jeans..."
I want to sew something now.
I should learn guitar too.

"HOW DA FUCK U CAN DISLIKE SOMETHING LIKE THIS"

thank goodness

there was all sorts of pain today and it came from all sorts of places both inside and outside the body, as well as it's mental/emotional/psychological states...and also there was quite a bit of pain inside and outside others' bodies and others' mental/emotional/psychological states. sometimes life is pain. but then the 99 cent store had diet chocolate soda again. so thank the universe for that...but sometimes life is pain.

Oh photography!

Super awesome hula hoop girl photograph...

funny joke?

today this kid informed me he had to interrupt our english language learning activities with a supposedly hilarious joke. "you don't want to dance with me? well then guess what, i don't want to dance with you either!"  how did he come up with that? "it just came to me." later we used plastic letters and spelled out D A N C E. and then W I T H and M E. then he said "how about 'dance with me baby!'" "really? you want to write that?" "no" "you don't?" "nah" "are you sure?" "well...okay..." he spelled it out. "now how would you arrange if you wanted to say, 'baby dance with me?'" he did that and then it was time to put the letters away. "no, let's leave it up there, so other people can see it!" so we did.
