"Right at this time of year I once decided to have a party to bring together Japanese dance and flamenco. I felt there were invisible threads connecting these two forms of dance that seem at first glance to be so utterly opposite. Nihon buyΕ is one of the main arts of the geisha, but I never learned it. I was too old to start dance lessons at twenty-five, and anyway too tall (five feet seven inches), according to my geisha mother. Shamisen was already my gei (art), and so it remained. Since geisha tend to specialize as either dancers or musicians, it was perfectly acceptable that I didn't dance."
