So, I just listened to the DJ who was introducing "Refugee" and he said it's about dealing with a bad whiner and he thinks the lyrics about being tied up and held for ransom are brilliant sarcasm and he also said you would wish that this kind of song would never be written about you. He also grovels a lot about the genius of Tom Petty.
Man, I just thought the song was a lot more nuanced than that.
Anyways his take reminded me of people who say that the patriarchy trains men to be misogynistic docile creatures who want to submit to other men and tear down women. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I actually think somebody who might have been sex trafficked or something might listen to the song and have a very different take on it.
