I was trying to figure out why some people seemed to be able to go along with certain things when I couldn't go along with them as well, and as I was eating, I had a strange experience that seemed a bit instructive.
I made some pasta and some olive oil and chopped garlic and fresh basil leaves and roasted tomatoes and a little bit of salt and pepper.
I started to eat my pasta. Everything was going great but then I had this one bite and I had to spit it out because something about the tomato was off or bad.
Suddenly I got a memory of being a kid at a birthday party and everybody was eating pizza. For some reason, when I was handed my slice of pizza and I bit into it, it was one of the worst things I had ever tasted.
I looked all around me and everybody else was enjoying their pizza and the mother of the birthday child sank her teeth into a slice as well.
I couldn't understand why everyone was enjoying it when I just could not stand the taste of it.
Biting into that bad tomato with the pasta reminded me of that long ago moment with the bad slice of pizza that I got.
I don't remember getting sick or anything. I do think the taste of it made me feel rather sick. I think I tried to take one or two bites to fit in with the rest, and I just couldn't eat any more than that. It was one of the worst things I had ever tasted and I couldn't believe that this is what everybody wanted to eat at a birthday party.
It's not that I dislike pizza, at all. I don't know why, but something was off about that particular slice, and that was the one I got.
