Ashtrays were everywhere. Watching your teenage babysitter breathe her brown breath onto paper towels as a warning so you wouldn't smoke as much she did & feeling mystified at whatever spell Van Halen (D.L. Roth mostly) was always casting over her & not understanding why mom got mad that you had told her it was okay to drink the gin under the sink & finding it strange that she treasured a street sign a boy had stolen for her SO MUCH AND telling her you thought she had a great voice & could become a famous singer! Singing & memorizing Stevie Nicks songs. "Delta Dawn" again and again. It was on "Name That Tune." She was very afraid of birds and we had one that we let out of the cage sometimes, so she had to deal with her trauma in order to make money.

"This past summer, Bobbie rallied a number of local families with
milkweed, or just open hearts, to rear some monarch caterpillars,"
explained Stagg. "We fell in love with monarchs and were concerned about
the drastic declines in native populations. I mentioned it to the MGC
board, and [president] Penny Walwark requested an article for our
newsletter. I passed the journalistic opportunity to our butterfly
nursery leader, Bobbie Preston, and the rest is history.
