I also think it's fun to pair Shaw's Pygmalion with Steinbeck's East of Eden. Although at present I am more familiar with Kazan's East of Eden. I also haven't seen My Fair Lady yet. I turned the page of my Pygmalion library book, and Mrs. Pearce just told Liza that she's trying to change her from "a frowsy s*** to a clean respectable girl fit to sit with the gentleman in the study." A gentleman she's afraid might drug her chocolate, because apparently, that's what some gentleman did, sometimes, back in the day!
