Maybe a higher power can help them.

Maybe they seem selfish, but maybe they also seem like addicts who need help or something. And also how can you help an addict if the addict doesn't want to help themselves? That's why people get very harmed by these kinds of situations.

Yes, maybe it's better to see people as just being addicted to certain ways of coping with reality. Sometimes that means they're addicted to shutting out other people. Sometimes it means they're addicted to acting like houses are more important than human rights. 

Sometimes it means they need to find others who have turned on their fawn responses in order to feel better about themselves and act like they're being a successful cult leader because something got inside of them when they were young and they were taught that they are supposed to be a successful cult leader when they grow up.
