"In early 1900s American orphanages..."

This was cool to learn about, since the movie "Annie" had such a huge influence on girls my age. I also remember being in the back of a car in upstate New York, and someone pointing out that we were driving past an old orphanage, and I was filled with a deep longing to know more about what it was actually like to grow up in one.

And I also remembered "My Place," the library book that I read in high school. It taught me about how was customary for the children of many Aboriginal mothers to be taken away to orphanages, since the mothers had to work, and they couldn't take care of their own children.
