"Hannah Arendt and 'the Banality of Evil'” | by Andrew Szanton | Medium

Today I am working on holding space for healing while acknowledging that some jarring consequences can occur when traumatic responses are not healed enough. Really not wanting to repeat certain patterns because they gave me shivers and panic attacks (I will look more into "The Banality of Evil.")
But now, I really do want to focus more on healing while acknowledging also that there have been real reasons why I felt certain kinds of angry or resistant responses. I want to know how to integrate that into a more healing way of life, because if the anger and the resistance gets out of hand, it's just not going to be good for this body, and I have learned that very well.
Stress inflicted medical issues have resulted in significant consequences, but positive changes can also come about. I can still endeavor to make the best of this experience and turn it into a healing one.
It almost seems like when some people can't talk about issues or can't admit that there are alternative ways of looking at things, they are clinging to a point of view that is so discriminatory, and so narrow, and so mean, that they don't even realize they're punishing themselves by doing that.
Like, they're actually being mean to themselves, because in this life, lots of people can be curious and open about different perspectives and different experiences. But if they need to be right so much that they have to discriminate against other people, it seems like they're operating under some very shame-based programs, because to admit fault or lack of knowledge about anything means to admit to being "a terrible person" or something like that, to them.
Like the way people are called terrible sinners when they are raised in conservative religious environments. Sometimes, that stuff gets into their heads and they seem to not realize that they're still operating under those belief systems. It's very hard for some people to relinquish control or to see different points of view for some reason. Maybe they're too afraid of the things they don't want to see, or look at, or even try to consider, to have any kind of discussion.

Even the most optimistic predictions of the consequences of climate change or other major disruptions include massive migration. As new and greater populations are forced into the underground, we are fostering the growth of new migratory languages, and these new languages are in turn fostering what Gog, the King of the Tramps, called self-awareness, the knowledge that the undocumented belong to a new and growing class of migrants that stretches to many parts of the world.

I can read it and appreciate a certain kind of journey a lot, yet I know I'm going to have to do something different.
"He dug deeper into the history of Yiddish and was particularly interested in its enemies, inspired no doubt by his experience with Rotwelsch and its plentiful detractors, including his own father. In the case of Yiddish, however, there weren't just anti-semitic enemies to contend with but also groups within the Jewish community. Many rabbis and Bible scholars dismissed Yiddish as the language of everyday life and unfit for higher uses, like literature. Equally opposed to Yiddish, but for different reasons, were some of those advocating a return to Palestine. While a number of early Zionists imagined a Jewish state with German as its official language, others believed that in Palestine Jews would refer to Hebrew as the language of everyday life...Despite these external and internal enemies Yiddish expanded over the course of the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries and as Günter discovered, one weapon proved particularly important for its defense: literature."
Page 137 of "The Language of Thieves: My Family's Obsession with a Secret Code the Nazis Tried to Eliminate" by Martin Puchner
"After the Bible and Shakespeare, there was no stopping him. He ranged widely in literary history, both high and low, translating an eighteenth century conduct manual instructing young gentlemen on how to address ladies, a Sicilian fairy tale, a lullaby, numerous short stories, and journalistic articles as well as a short text on Marxism and Christianity...All of these texts Günter painstakingly translated into Rotwelsh, a language only he could read. The absurdity of his undertaking haunted me. What could have been the purpose of this doomed translation exercise?"
Page 139, Martin Puchner
"Perhaps Günter's plunge into Rotwelsch was atonement or something closer to revenge. He mentioned several times that Yiddish and Rotwelsch speakers had been sent to concentration camps. The accusatory tone is palpable. The fact that he put his father's copy of Mein Kampf along his Rotwelsch books points in the same direction. My father had said that no one in the family knew about my grandfather's anti-Semitic articles, including the ones that talk about Rotwelsch. My cousins believe their father was drawn to the language solely because of its lightness and wit, but I can't shake the hunch that somehow my uncle must have known about his father's opposition to the language. The alternative seemed even stranger that he would have almost instinctively stumbled on the topic his father hated most. Even if Günter didn't know that his father objected to Rotwelsch and that this objection was connected with his father's compromised past, Günter's dedication to Rotwelsch would have served a more general, historical atonement, atonement for a regime that tried to eliminate the language and its speakers."
Page 142, Martin Puchner
"I now had before me the arc of Günter's work. It began with the literary journal, took a turn to Rotwelsch with his massive research and translation project, and ended with his attempted fusion of Rotwelsch and Yiddish into German. What looked to me like an eccentric hobby, then an obsession, turned out to be a serious undertaking with a purpose."

Just because you saw big people treating X types of people badly when you were a little person, that does not mean you have to replicate what the big people did to X types of people now that you're a bigger person yourself.
A lot of people should stop treating other people's children so badly just so they can make themselves feel more acceptable to the bullies they either chose to be around, or somehow got assigned to in this life, to shape their characters.

Also, unfortunately, it just reminds me of how easily some people end up getting pushed into going along with various kinds of bullying behaviors just to "fit in" with their friends or their relatives or their workplace situations or so they can go along with whatever gets them access to resources they feel they need access to.
They don't want to think too deeply. They just feel the need to go along with whatever behavior got role modeled for them by others in order to get what they need.

"Since the end of the war there has been much revisionist history about the role, and acts, of the Allied forces. Some of it challenges the idea that one side was 'evil', and the other 'good', and perhaps rightly so. Documents showed that the British and Americans were well aware of the extermination of the Jews in Auschwitz as far back as 1943 -- and dismissed a petition to bomb the gas chambers in the summer of 1944. A British Foreign Office official wrote that bombing Auschwitz might lead to a 'flood of refugees' who would head towards Palestine, then still a British protectorate, and demand an independent homeland. Maybe the bombing of Auschwitz would have made little difference, most of its victims were already dead by then. Maybe even more people would have been killed in the attack -- who knows. What is certain is that winning the war and maintaining a strong anti-immigration policy were more important priorities for the Allies than helping the Jews.
Much has also been written about the role of Russian soldiers in their campaign of rape against German women. I wish I could say that I can find it in my heart to feel sorry for these women but, given what happened to my family at the hands of the Nazi regime they supported, I cannot. You will have to understand that I cannot be objective about this subject -- my own suffering and loss will always be too deep and too raw. Intellectually, however, I believe that human rights applied to everyone and that atrocities committed against anyone are wrong."

Perhaps they are a way to process human beings' collective vulnerabilities and delusions, so that more can begin to acknowledge that when people are constantly persuaded to selfishly do what's worse for themselves and their children, not to mention what's worse for other people and their children, that's not going to be sustainable in the future.
Now I need to figure out how to heal more. Others need to figure out more about how to heal, too. I do not know why some people chose to behave in certain ways. But there’s more choices available. That's good to know.

This physical sensitivity shows me I am sorry that sensitive and vulnerable people suffer from the brutality and insensitivity of others.
People who have to act like insensitive bullies are not making great use of their time.
Some people who have seemed to have a good capacity for sensitivity sometimes also have gotten convinced to act otherwise, and that is stressful to behold.
Perhaps they buried parts of themselves in order to feel certain things? Maybe so.
People are complicated.
When more vulnerable humans get treated worse by insensitive ones, some of us get tired of people's brutality and remembering instances of it in this life.

Sometimes I think that even though reading or hearing about or feeling the effects of brutal oppression is very hard, maybe what I actually find is the hardest thing about being alive right now is how disappointing some people can be when times get tough.
They revert into child-like states.
I mean in movies about fascism, people rise to the occasion right? They get courageous and noble!
In a movie celebrating the ones who are true and good, you think you will know the ones who are like that if you were ever living in such dire times.
But honestly, a lot of people don't want to change. Sometimes they act like they want life to be like a party that revolves around their own ego. You get the sense that you really cannot rely on these people at all.
Or maybe they're scared.
So it's very disappointing, sometimes.
I mean it was beyond disappointing. It was like pea soup thick depression. I don't want to be here anymore. I don't know why I'm here.
But it's also very human.
Hey fascism, why can't you go back into your nice little movie that we can watch on the screen and then discuss the merits of the performance afterwards?
Why am I here?
I guess now it seems that I'm here to survive and to witness things and to evolve.
Thank you for the opportunity to evolve.
I want people to get the good nurturing and healing they deserve.
Lots of people can't just pretend that things are fine right now, and that's because a lot of stuff is happening that's shaking everything up. A lot of the systems were so unhealthy, and everything is falling apart.
And I think it's good to not have to pretend that things are fine, actually. It feels healthier to acknowledge that there's chaotic things happening to a lot of people right now.
It's more important to me that people get the healing that they deserve, and I don't think that pretending that things are fine when they're not fine is going to help that happen.
Things are not fine, but I'm going to learn how to be okay with knowing that, not in the sense that I don't want things to get better, but in the sense that, since things do not get better as fast or as quickly as maybe they would in some idealized world, taking care of ourselves as best as we can is what is really good for us now.
Some older people have made it a lot easier for some of the younger people to be way less racist or sexist or supportive of fascism.

How can some older people still act no more trustworthy than a drunken young person at a fraternity party where bad things are bound to happen?
Materialistic people really do seem like some of the very worst people at caring for themselves or others sometimes.
Also not great about taking responsibility or being at all sensitive in ways that could benefit both themselves and others, too
And they're still in so much pain, too.
They're just replicating the coping techniques that they learned, though.
Time to get grounded and get some stuff done now, cuz that's what I want to do.
Don't really want to stay inside having a panic attack all day.
In some ways, I feel like what people did by putting extremely irresponsible people in power is replicating how extremely irresponsible some adults and parents have been with children. People need to get better and stop being in denial. But anyways, everybody has to get better on their own timeline I guess.
I just really want to cry right now. I'm not the only one having a hard time. A lot of people are having hard times these days.
People who are doing better seem to be from a long far away distant country right now.
I have no idea when I will feel better. But yesterday was better, actually.
I spent nice times with a good person and I had so much of the day when I wasn't feeling too bad and it was just like a big treasure to be able to feel that way.
I wonder if I can get feeling that way back again.
I can do more energy healing things and supplements and essences. And also I'm going to go out and do an errand or two.
Maybe any of these things will help.

How much more grateful I feel, even though I still have a lot of that sadness. I feel grateful because the universe does care and that is the truth. It's normal for the universe to care for humans. All kinds of humans, even or especially humans that feel very broken or isolated or have come to master particularly difficult lessons in this life. And they may struggle along the way, because it's hard, because humans are trying to evolve, and some of them start evolving certain patterns before others do. That's how it goes when patterns evolve on Earth. Not everybody can be on the same page all the time. But the universe still cares and it's happy for humans to become happier and healthier humans.
I'm going to get help with healing now. I have gotten some help recently. But when I was by myself I started to feel worse again. I am going to get help with healing and letting go of some things. Being in different places is part of life on this planet. Just stay away from these people for now and help yourself with more healing, and maybe in the future you will be stronger and it won't be so upsetting, and you'll let it go more easily even if it does get to you. You can see and feel when you need healing and ask the universe for assistance. And do not expect people who are not open to experiencing those things to have any idea about what they're doing when they're being kind of crude or rude or just maybe not as refined as they could be when it comes to how they treat other people. Some are more wired for being more sensitive and more empathic and things like that. Things will unfold as they unfold, and just go with the flow as best as you can for now.
I'm pretty sad. Perhaps too many people being mean and emotionally immature has been harsh to witness at a time like this. I'm pretty sad again though. It's the main thing I want to help myself with. The sad part is getting to be too much. Not long ago I believed it was getting better. Surely it can and will start getting better again. I believe it is possible and I believe it can happen and I believe it will happen and I believe better things can and will happen now. Yes, let's believe this.
My reaction to the trailer: Ugh, is this the "Mad Men" version of Nuremberg? Yeah, I did watch "Mad Men." But why is the need to Hollywoodize it feeling so icky?

I kind of wonder why I can think of at least three little local brick and mortar restaurants that have just shut down this year when they were well-liked, but they were smaller "ethnic cuisine" places run by people who had immigrated here from other regions.
And who were the majority of their clientele, too? Are the majority of their clientele now either gone, or they no longer have the money to patronize those places? That's another thing to consider.
Can any of them be in happier spaces now, and may they find some greener pastures?
It's also, why do you act that way? Also, what do you lose if you stop acting that way? And, perhaps even better to consider, what do you gain if you stop acting that way, and start acting in a much better way?

I like to get the Murasaki potatoes that come in a sack. The sack says they are grown somewhere here in California for Trader Joe's. I think wherever they are grown must have fewer workers this year because they are smaller and stringier and they still have lots of dirt on them. They used to be much bigger and they were washed much better before they were put into a sack and sold at the store.
It's also been amazing to be able to survive so much of the extra, unnecessary stuff.

Besides their own brains and their own insecurity and the effects on them by the unwell society they kept, what makes some believe they're so entitled to discriminate against other people to make themselves feel a little better?
Whose children is that actually good for? Is it a lot of children? Is it just a small amount of children? Is it actually no children that that's good for?
Seems like it's actually no children that that's actually good for. That's how unhealthy it seems. Why would some people choose to be that unhealthy?
Some people became meaner either because they were abused themselves, or because they saw others being abusive and thought, that's what I'm supposed to do, too. Maybe a bit of both.
It's extremely messed up. They get fearful and dishonest and they run away and they keep on being mean and living a lesser life than they needed to live, instead of facing things and getting help.
I am traumatized and sad that innocent people are being persecuted right now just because they migrated here from another place. And children are being so terribly traumatized by very selfish people. Human rights violations occur daily.
I'm secondarily traumatized and sad that certain supposedly fortunate people are being so callous and their selfishness is NOT OKAY. It's an illness.
I don't want to act like them. I don't want to act like money and houses and cars and status entitle me to act like I can be such a mean, narcissistic person. It's disgusting and it makes me sick. People who used to seem better have shown that they have been trained to feel entitled to act this way.
These demoralizing people have been such depressing experience at a time like this. It's like the worst of people's greed and selfishness and immaturity is coming out and being exposed now.
The patriarchal society has warped these people and it's so depressing to think about their justifications for their selfishness. Some higher sources can help them. They were trained to act like prejudiced, sexist, racist insensitive jerks. I am the kind of person that they also treat badly. I don't want to think about them now. Hopefully they get help before this lifetime ends for them.
And perhaps it was a higher source that helped humans craft this song and teach it to young children:
"Jesus loves the little children. All the children of the world. Red and yellow, black and white. They are precious in his sight. Jesus loves the little children of the world."
Flabbergasted by the wounded ones' meanness. It just seems so foolish to choose to be mean to others when there are so many other choices available. Could they not see their other options? It wouldn't have cost them anything at all to be less dehumanizing to others. It's hurtful, and maybe not something that one can understand right away.
How to heal from the carelessness that caused harm when the careless ones are still so in denial that it seems like they're determined to live a lie they got programmed into perpetuating.
I feel like my nervous system is traumatized by people who make the world more unsafe because they are stuck in stubborn sexist mindsets they acquired long ago and they were trained to exclude so many kinds of girls and women just because they are not like them.
It feels like a horror; they will abandon people just for having a different kind of genetics. It smacks of terrible suffering and death. And they feel so entitled to do it, too. It feels like it happened before, like violence. I want to get healed from the way this has rattled my nervous system.
Unfortunately, if a person just used to seem insensitive or uncaring about some things in one kind of environment, now that lack of sensitivity becomes a worse thing because the really dangerous people are feeling more entitled to inflict harm on others. Then it seems like the insensitive ones are helping them.

Just because you grew up in a racist or sexist environment doesn't mean you have to replicate those old behaviors, even if it strangely feels more comfortable to you because it was what was around you when you were growing up, and you were harmed by it less than others were.

They just don't want to talk about it.Patriarchal people really want to give you cookies for replicating their weird bullying behaviors because then you make them feel more comfortable about their own selfish choices, but only temporarily, because they are very insecure.
Patriarchal people are trained to think that if you kick others in the face and feel good about it then you're doing it right.
It's amazing what horrible things some insensitive people will do to others just so they can feel more in control and like they do not have to change too much because that is just what feels comfortable enough for them.
I know I want to get better because I feel tense, traumatized by egotistical, emotionally immature jerks who just have such a will to insist on being self-absorbed assholes who need to ruin things with their greedy selfishness and appallingly untrustworthy behavior.

And if a person who has seemed to care A LOT about injustice in the past finds themselves decades later supporting the guy who wants to make America fascist again for what I'm sure is an incredibly complex web of reasons, I suppose it just points out the FRAGILITY of the human brain, especially when it comes to CULT-like behaviors and mentalities.
Too bad most of the people in charge didn't become kinder, better people after becoming parents. May they drop their need to be insensitive assholes who discriminate against others. Sooner rather than later.
Also, I am glad to have enjoyed meeting some of the kinder parents. I think such parents could be good parents to a much wider variety of children, and good friends to a wider variety of human beings.
Like, they wouldn't require children to replicate their lives or experiences have their exact genetics, and they wouldn't be as likely punish any children for having different life experiences than they've had.
I am hopeful that this type of healing mindset will become much more acceptable and normal in the future.

Maybe you need to listen to someone who's less upset than I am, and who's going to be nicer to you about some of this stuff? There are people who are a lot more advanced than me when it comes to communicating, of course. I think you need to believe that you're capable of getting off the old drugs and making some good changes for yourself. I just don't have the expertise that some others have when it comes to knowing how to approach that sort of thing. I get in the "I can see things are wrong. Why haven't you been able to see this? Why haven't you been listening?" mood sometimes.
"A family's fishing trip ends with the dad at 'Alligator Alcatraz'..."
Well, if some of the children who now have to grow up under fascism wind up being a lot pickier when it comes to making certain really important life choices, that seems like it could be a beneficial thing.
Patriarchal cults want you to feel good like sellers of drugs want you to feel good.
It's as if the bad people took over so people would see that when they are selfish, they are not "okay." But couldn't people wake up in better ways?
Why do the mean, insensitive people who are liberal and the mean, insensitive people who are conservative have so much in common? Shall they meet on the common ground of selfishness and figure things out in that way? But what if they could change and meet on a much better foundation?
She's just trying to see her cousin, man.
"They're getting treated like prisoners"

Why are some people so stubborn about being attached to the flimsy crutches that they're constantly relying on even when there is so much evidence right in front of them that they are not sufficient support, and that going on that way is incredibly harmful to humanity?
For example, if you hate Hitler and all he stands for, but you are delusional enough to support Trump and what he is doing to people, I wonder if you were a Nazi in your last life, and when you reincarnated in this life, because of your circumstances, you started to feel more empathy for others, and it seemed like you might doing better this time around, but you got halfway through and now you are failing the assignment, again.
