"Bolek Szpilberg Is another curious personality. He comes to school in a different suit every day. He is the son of wealthy parents, and is quite talented. He seems older than his eighteen years, is of medium height and is very distinguished looking. Bolek was born in Palestine, although he is really a British subject, and as such, was obliged periodically to report to the Gestapo. But he procured an Italian birth certificate for a considerable sum of money, and registered with the Gestapo under his own name, but as an Italian citizen, and struts around the school without an armband. Yet one day when the Germans came to inspect our school, he quickly dawned an armband. His face was flushed and he trembled all over. I realized then what a coward he is."
