The manager (call her Ms. M) gives us a smile and free gift cards.She is very nice. C used to work with Ms. M and Ms. M was very nice to her also. C also used to work with Mr. S. Mr. S harassed and degraded her. Two young male employees of Mr. S copied Mr. S's example. Why shouldn't they? C was expected to be a good sport about it. She started dreading going to work. She knew it was bad when she found herself fantasizing about getting hit by a car at a stoplight just so she wouldn't have to deal with Mr. S and his young imitators. C says, "I wanted to work in the XX department. All men worked in XX department. They promoted a teenage guy to XX Apprentice. I have XX training and I was just trying to be a clerk, and they wouldn't give me that. C says, "I said to Ms. M, 'What can I do to achieve this.' Ms. M said, "I don't want to mention names, but be more like an E." "What happened with E?" "E got called a whore. She left and went to another company." "Well, you left them too. I guess you were like E!" That was a year ago. Have things changed? Ms. M gave us free gift cards. She is very nice. She just couldn't or wouldn't effectively combat discrimination in the workplace.
