Gratitude

Isn't it great to enjoy the gift of literacy?

A new interpretation of the diction of the poem, centering on lac (usually taken as "gift" or "combat" but also meaning "medicine" and wena/wenum (usually translated "yearnings" but also meaning "wens" or "tumors"), argues that the poem may be a charm against wens. The speaker is a woman (perhaps only figuratively), and Wolf is thought of as a disease spirit, engendering the wen as child (hwelp) on the narrator-victim, who speaks a diminishing charm to the disease. Eadwacer is most likely an epithet, "easily-weaker," addressed to the disease spirit.

Happy hunting trails

After much exploration, I finally found:

The Moment I Feared

I wanted to find this entry about FB friend's silly encounter with someone named "Devin-the-Dude" because it gave me a flashback from when the Dude was in my Spanish class. He seemed like he was having a happy popular athlete high school life. Lots of people liked him. The witchy teacher would tell us we were the worst class she ever had. One time, after I said "shut up" to a guy for saying something derogatory that I don't even remember, she put me in a corner. "I don't allow language like that in my classroom." Because she treated us like small children she could barely tolerate, I was cruelly amused that she was going bald. (Which is sad; she could've had PCOS.)

Anyway, one day when she wasn't paying attention, the Dude got bored and hissed my name.

"What?" I said, astonished that Popular Athlete Boy was singling me out for some reason.

"You give me a semi."

As the rest of the students laughed, he looked pretty pleased with himself. I made a disgusted face, but was actually laughing also, internally. Acting offended was simply was my little part in a skit that was necessary to relieve the awful tedium and monotony of being in the class. He was zero percent intimidating. Least threatening sexual harassment incident ever.

Anyway, after I read more of this, I realized that perhaps his life wasn't all sunshine for him. Although he still seemed to have retained that hyper attitude, in FB friend's entry. It was amusing to read...

Lurking

Lurker Appreciation

Why aren't you alive now? Come back and be alive!
I will make more of an effort.

What is Healthcare?

Whatever:

The prevailing narrative seems to be that if you don't have health insurance by now, you must be some stupid procrastinator who waited until the last minute to sign up. If you don't have it by now, it's all just because of bad attitudes, and it's your own fault. Although I am doing well in my studies & have accumulated a 4.0 over the course of three semesters of taking classes part-time, I am apparently not intelligent enough to work the health insurance system.

Maybe if Covered California hadn't automatically funneled everyone making under 15k into the MediCal system, more people in this state would be insured by now.

A previously uninsured relative of mine in the "backward" state of South Carolina has had insurance since the beginning of the year.

Big TV moments

On the new 30-something (?) inch screen, this show is unexpectedly riveting:

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2014/04/dancing-with-the-stars-partners-switch-davis-outshines-competition/

Especially since it's got Danica Kellar, who wrote the math book for teenage girls. Unfortunately, since I felt like I was not the exactly the type of teenage girl that book seems to depict, it was a little hard for me to completely relate the examples, but I still admire the effort and I want to try to read it again.

O craziness, there's like a whole series?

Health insurance, whereforeartthou?

Last week, I was able to speak with a very lovely sounding woman named Monserrat.

From thinkbabynames

Originally I was going to physically go in and wait in line, but when I called to ask about parking, they seemed to not want me to do that. Monserrat said that they had my information. She said, "We'll take care of this today." (Magical words!)

A while later, Monserrat gives me a new reference number. She gives me a new phone number. She gives me another name. She says, "This is who you should call to check on your status..."

Sigh.

And naturally, that person has not been available or able to return my phone calls yet.

And I was just texting with someone whose boyfriend has run into snafus with the healthcare thing (but he should be covered in May) and had to pay for an emergency room visit last night.

Can I get something by April 15? Tomorrow would be nicer. Today?

accidental poetry

Today is such a do-the-chores day. Yesterday was a walking / seeing hummingbirds / accidentally-stumbling-into-poetry readings day.

A poet named Shabla read from this book.

A poet named Harris read a tanka and a sonnet from a book I cannot find and also shared A New Flower by Denise Levertov.

This was an interesting radio show on the way home.

Birds...and a cat

Saw a book all about OWLS in a book store.

Found an owl dream story:

A cat walked across my window in the a.m.  The real cat was walking on the roof next door just as the sunlight was coming in at a certain angle so that it projected it's shadow perfectly. I woke up to see this kitty-shaped shadow walking across the top of the window blinds, and I was delighted.

EMOtionalcollisions

One thing I discovered in college was that

1) I was capable of writing a paper on a something that had completely traumatized me to the point where I hated writing about it  and I was convinced I was turning in a terrible paper

and

2) the professor who received the paper was still happy to give me a good grade and ask if he could read it aloud as a good example to the class.

Weird, huh? That's what I said to myself.
