When we read that book in English class and a bunch of people started saying, "She seems so racist against white people," (including a lot of not white people were saying that), and that was apparently their primary impression of the book.
Some of those people are probably other people's parents now.
So, after I read "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings," and I thought oh, if only they would have us read a book like this in school, in class, and then it actually happened. Well, I found out. Be careful what you wish for.
