"During the rally, she shared the stories of several Spanish-speaking families in the area, including one local mother who was recently evicted from a studio apartment she shared with her three daughters. The mother, Perez said, 'begged to stay' in the unit, but the landlord refused to extend the lease and also refused to return the full security deposit. Despite the fact that there were several open units on the property, Perez said the landlord gave the family an ultimatum: pay another full deposit to stay in one of the open studios or live in the landlord’s garage until they were able to find another apartment. She couldn’t afford the extra deposit, and the family of four squeezed into the garage space 'alongside garden tools,' Perez said, until they could find a new home."
