Cultural norms can be too crushing. All the tears from unresolved childhood pain come to the surface. Staring at a rock wall in California echoes staring at rock cliffs in the Catskills. The sensitive people who didn't get very much support (because the Patriarchal Culture really loves ignorance) don't need to be around insensitive ones. Imagine if the culture began sufficiently acknowledging more people though.
