"Cultural 'fit' is a critical and covert means by which dominant groups hoard opportunities for themselves. The French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu coined the term 'habitus' to describe and explain how people with similar backgrounds and life experiences come to share similar habits, unspoken knowledge about ways of interacting and behaving, and so on. When two such similarly 'mindshaped' people come together, it is like a perfectly executed waltz, thanks to the 'harmonization of agents' experiences and the continuous reinforcement that each of them receives from the expression . . . of similar or identical experiences. This creates problems for outsiders trying to join the dance."
