Isn't she nice?!

"Mrs. Rhoades, the wife of an Army captain joined her and dipped herself some punch as she said, 'I just think it's so good of your parents to let you go to that school with all those foreigners.'

'All the students at my school are Hawaiians,' Veronica answered quickly.

'But you're not Hawaiian,' the woman said. 'You're American.'

'I'm just as Hawaiian as any of my classmates. I was born right here in Honolulu.'

Veronica could see her mother listening in on the conversation. Her mother expected her to be polite to everyone all the time. She said it was the first duty of a Navy officer's wife or daughter.

'But they're all such a mixture of something,' Mrs. Rhoades continued.

.....

'...my boyfriend is probably what most people think of as typical Hawaiian. He's Hawaiian French, Chinese and Portuguese.'

'And they all go to the same high school.' Mrs. Road shook her head. 'It's so democratic.'

'His name is Mike Kokohuilano.' Veronica decided to ignore Mrs. Rhoades insincere enthusiasm and keep talking about Mike. She wondered what he would say if he were here and what he'd think about being described as her boyfriend. She decided he'd just laugh. Imagining his laughter cheered her up.

......

'Most Americans are interesting mixtures,' Veronica said. ' I'm English and German and part Scottish and Irish. What are you?'"
