Is there not a long history of women being imprisoned by money? Example: you are born to a rich family in the Renaissance...as a girl. Get almost everything...jewels, gowns, the best artists at your court, and yes you had to get married off to an older man, but guess what. He actually likes / loves you and its not horrible at all. It can be lots of fun! Well, except that he has mistresses. See, he is allowed to. You are not allowed such. Your job is to be the wife and bear children. Especially BOY children. But you do that too! You got almost everything and did exactly what was expected of you! What, you didn't want to repeat that again?
For a guy: the world is your gorgeous, glittering candy bowl. Then your wife dies in childbirth. Everything goes downhill and you die trying to escape a dungeon after being imprisoned for years. You didn't want to repeat that experience?
