There were women and men who seemingly did not know how to succeed without adopting sexist patriarchal attitudes in this life.

There have been a number of women and men who consistently treated men better, particularly if the men are considered more successful intellectually or artistically. 

They were not at all inclined to give an equal amount of respect to certain types of women. There's a patriarchal hierarchy of importance in their brains, and it comes out in their attitudes, behavior patterns and treatment of people.

I think this is because they were raised in patriarchal households, and a combination of their attitudes and society's attitudes taught them that it was the normal way to behave. So it felt completely normal to them to dismiss certain kinds of people while elevating others.
