And it's been made very clear to me that a lot of people don't care that much about making the world more unsafe for others. 

They care more about fitting in with their friends and family, and they're totally fine with making the world more unsafe for others if it means that they can feel social acceptance.

But if someone they deem socially valuable might get disgusted with their behavior, that's when they get a little bit more motivated to make different decisions.
