"Salinas teen Melissa Zavala co-wrote a first-of-its-kind resolution recognizing farmworkers. Zavala traveled to Washington, D.C., for the Mikva Challenge Soapbox National Showcase, where she performed a speech focusing on the backbone of the largest industry in her community, agriculture.
“'According to Farm Progress Data, Salinas produces 85% of the nation’s summer vegetables, 50% of strawberries, and a large percentage of its fruits and nuts. All picked and processed by these individuals, they should be given credit and respect for the valuable job they do,' Zavala said in her speech."
