I have watched a good man kill a roach. We had the pest control person come back on Friday. Apparently they crawl up through dry pipes. Hope the new apartment doesn't have as much of a problem with them. Maybe put plugs over all the drains?

TV & criss-crossing topics

SHALL I DARE TRY TO WATCH?

"The Chair"

https://www.msn.com/en-us/lifestyle/lifestyle-buzz/how-the-chair-turns-a-beloved-literary-classic-inside-out/ar-AANJSC1

I found out my friend and her kid made it home safely from the horrible storm that's about to hit NOLA, & she also asked if I'd ever watched "The Chair." I told her my frame of mind wasn't especially keen on it because it kind of made me think about women acting like feminists in one context and making excuses for the bad behavior of male tenured colleagues in another. I have enough stress to deal with at the moment, so why invite more into my leisure time? It might be unfair to the show, but that's how I felt about it. But then she mentioned that the woman in the show is a single mom raising a daughter, and that got me thinking about how the choices of TV parents don't seem at all like the parenting we experienced growing up (or, in her case, since she has a kid, the parenting she practices). She thought I should watch it anyway so we can talk about it. Maybe I will...

Snack attack maybe?

This kind of thought is terribly stressful if you really think about it.

"Every patient with or without COVID19 that's in the ICU in NOLA is going to die this weekend. Many floor and ED patients too. They can't evacuate because no one in the Gulf Coast has beds. And there's no hospitals to go to if sick/injured. If you're in the cone run for your life."

https://twitter.com/RNickGorton/status/1431441655626752002

I, safely esconced on the West Coast, could deal with it by driving to one of those markets that purportedly sells the New Orleans style potato chips.

https://www.mashed.com/444647/the-untold-truth-of-zapps-potato-chips/

Snacking is comforting, and who knows what effects these small actions can have.

https://genius.com/Machines-of-loving-grace-butterfly-wings-lyrics

And yet if I think "If only it were 10 miles closer" enough, maybe I'll just stay put and pack boxes and eat roasted vegetables.

That's some creativity P

Militaristic types returning as much more evolved feminists sounds revolutionary to me.

Formative years flashback

One of the first times I remember watching SNL was when I was 12, eating pizza with a laid-back Christian group of younger adults in an upscale home in Monterey.  Everyone laughed at the skits until one came on about "T & A." And suddenly, no one was laughing! An attractive blond woman who was hosting the party did not laugh. An attractive Latino guy merely looked somber. I kept looking at them for cues...would it be okay to laugh now? When was it gonna get funny enough to laugh again?

The respect could kill you.

It might be...

It may take 500 years for society to change?

Pain, I will not deny that sometimes the saddest thing is to feel like the potential of something more positive got ruined, but I guess that's when you tell yourself that you can find other people who are more ready to change and not clinging to what feels like very old, unhealthy patterns.  Some people and their enablers are still too insensitive to know how much unnecessary damage they cause. They are not ready to change much. I am really not in a position to fix it for them when their livelihoods depend on toxic systems and fearful attitudes. So, it's a big planet and there are others. Or maybe the circumstances will be more fortuitous at another time.

It may take 500 years for society to change, but did it have to be that way?

Might be the praying type tonight

Weirdly bad back pain, sad news someone had to go to the hospital, and worry about a big storm... I want to be in touch with healing vibes.

I once met a woman who lost her family in hurricane Katrina and even though I never saw her again she was one of those strangers who can change your outlook on life.

Stories can have that affect on you if you're a sensitive person.

Now I gotta find out

if a friend can leave before the storm hits.
Life isn't fair, and this has been communicated before in various ways...

She also told me Bridge to Terabithia was good but so sad and that one I did not read until many years later. Maybe this one was enough...

Regarding older dudes (and sometimes the women who go along with them for various reasons) who are just rather unevolved when it comes to being sensitive to people who have experienced certain kinds of significant trauma, do you ever bother to note the example of the younger people who are strangely better at it? Do you ever ask yourselves why that is? Not too often, huh? What do you think of trying to get better at it yourselves, TOO? Is that something you could possibly ever attempt to do? Or is that still too much to ask? If so, why?

Maybe the sit-coms could become more environmentally-oriented too?

"Norgaard was puzzled by what she found: the people of Bygdaby were aware of climate change, yet they appeared untouched by this awareness. There were no signs of political action, not even letters to the newspaper, and no one seemed to be making changes in their behaviour:

What perplexed me was that despite the fact that people were clearly aware of global warming as a phenomenon, everyday life in Bygdaby went on as though it did not exist. Mothers listened to news of unusual flooding as they drove their children to school. Families watched evening news coverage of the failing climate talks in The Hague, then just tuned into American sit-coms.

This was a community directly affected by climate change, and familiar with the facts, yet there was no sense that it knew itself to be in trouble."

"For Christians, a classic expression of this attitude to reality appears in Paul’s first letter to the church at Corinth, from the chapter on love that gets read at weddings:

When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. (1 Corinthians 13:11–12)

The emphasis is on the partial nature of knowledge: in relation to the ultimate, our understanding is childlike"

Good energy is great

When people love it is great.

Love can also be like, you love a flower.

I want to get better at choosing a more healing path because it's a necessity. I have to get better at it and take care of my health and sometimes that means I will be on a different path than I felt pressured to take but I am going to get better at forgiveness.

Our planet can be so confusing. My body, what I must do to make it better...that's  my task right now.

I have a good partner and I am fortunate and love is here in twosomeness and maybe we will get a cat again soon.

I want to get better at being patient and trusting and finding people who do not mind helping and in fact find it a joy. Right? Maybe we lack the training to know how to be skillful and show our compassionate selves more often, but the capacity to learn and try new things can return to us. Like a gift we lost but found again.

I guess I am very grateful to my body in a way because I am learning to love more, since it's a healing practice, and my body has told me healing is what we need.

I feel concerned about health things still, but I also believe in helpful people and helpful energies and love in lots of forms. That makes me happy.

I shall tend to my physical being with ginger tea and soon, sleep.

REPEATING FOR EMPHASIS

Friend at another school: We are online until next Spring.

Me: Wow, that sounds very healthy. BECAUSE...

INSERT TEXT TYPED EARLIER BELOW:

CATTY PUBLIC HEALTH RELATED INQUIRY: If someone tells you that as soon as anyone gets sick the whole class is gonna have to quarantine for 2 weeks and go online, d'ya think maybe it should've just been online to begin with and also the other online classes shouldn't have been cancelled at the last minute like that to up the enrollment for the in-person classes? I mean, just to save the FUTURE PATIENT ZERO from embarrassment for making everyone quarantine and go online if nothing else? ALSO, if everyone has to quarantine, is that just for class or also for their student jobs? WHAT if they're essential workers at the GROCERY STORE? Also what if I become one of those people who starts a cat website. HMMM.

On top of the other stuff

I wonder if the empty clinic in a local Target that takes my insurance but sees nobody on a Saturday would ever see me if my left side and stomach issues persist? I just better meditate and REST ALOT today. The person working there said that the way to make the appointment that was advertised on a big sign is no longer valid right now because of COVID but if I call the number on the back of my insurance card I can request the clinic if nothing that might be COVID-related is involved.

IT's CRANKY CATurday

Although I believe in good intentions and humor my energy at the moment seems to me to be more on the exhausted side...well perhaps a headache and sadness are some of the reasons...but I can believe in retrieved optimism too, which is why I say, isn't it a joy to recollect all these learning experiences too sometimes.

Seasons make shoes, pastries

Why not pay more attention to nature? Nature grows plants for our food and clothing for people to pick and process and without those things, you couldn't sit and watch your TV shows, could you?

Grown-up babies.

I wonder if I could meet Greta in the woods or Malala on a plane next time.

Shoe pastry seasons

I learned about making more veggie-centered dishes from someone who watches British baking shows and likes some comedy programs and will bake French pastries for her coworkers and maybe tonight I will finish the last episode of Season 1 of the farm show. Because why NOT?

"Rao's nomination attracted some opposition due to some of her college writing on race, sexual assault, and feminism.[16] In response, Rao publicly apologized for these writings.[17] A hearing on her nomination before the Senate Judiciary Committee was held on February 5, 2019. Rao was asked by several Senators about her college writings, some of which they viewed as sexual assault victim blaming. Rao responded, "A victim of a horrible crime is not to blame and the person who commits those crimes should be held responsible."[18]"

"US Bans Toxic Pesticide on Food Crops"| Human Rights Watch

https://www.hrw.org/news/2021/08/18/us-bans-toxic-pesticide-food-crops

"Exposure to chlorpyrifos is associated with a number of health risks, including endocrine disruption, suffocation, and adverse impacts on fetal and childhood development associated with prenatal exposure, all of which were outlined in the original 2007 petition to ban the pesticide. In the decade that followed, the risks only became more clear. By 2015, the EPA acknowledged that they could not conclude that use of chlorpyrifos met federal safety standards. But chlorpyrifos remained legal – and continued to be used – for six more years.

“'During that time,' wrote Judge Jed Rakoff in his April decision for the 9th Circuit ordering EPA to make a final decision on the safety of the pesticide, 'the EPA’s egregious delay exposed a generation of American children to unsafe levels of chlorpyrifos.'"
