I only saw parts of a certain film *the "Phil Collins scene* back in graduate school, but I think I remember saying to a guy who was considering teaching it that I didn't think it was such a good idea to have it on the syllabus for a freshmen "Intro to English" class.

Life experiences can be like ice cream

Rum raisin is old-fashioned and something a deceased female relative could have decided was her absolute favorite flavor and maybe it could be intriguing for you to try if its made really, really, really well with top quality ingredients, but you know it could be an awful flavor if it's not made well or if you're not in the mood for it.

I showed a dude some funny stuff

And I got screechy and he made up a funny name for a "Glow" type of character but also I forgot this number. This number is very very very high!

Back in the 90s, Critical Mass was a group that made me feel conflicted cause I had a bike messenger friend who rode with them and I knew they'd sometimes protest cars by stopping traffic on the freeway and I would think "okay, but what if a woman in labor is in one of those cars trying to get to a hospital?"

Consistency matters. Like consistently getting reminders that ppl aren't living up to being  better versions of themselves.

For attractive ppl who have a lot going for them, there are some who really go out of their way to look, well, rather repulsive at times.

It's really not that hard to visualize just 20 or 50 years in the future, in general terms.

Bodies are ecosystems too

At least I have been re-learning that exercise for a body (like swimming, since I have access to a pool again this year) can help a person feel better about living in one.

Maybe if more people were encouraged to take better care of themselves healthwise (not just upperclass people) then doing the same for the environment would come more naturally.

TIME o time

Maybe some people wouldn't have to deal with so many internal conflicts if they were wiser and more attuned to their growth, spiritually. Might be that whatever religious beliefs they were exposed to in childhood were not the greatest and continually referring back to them is not the best use of time.

Good grief.

"Looking at them, she was reminded of more artistic images from the era, particularly a painting by Edgar Degas, now called Interior (formerly known as The Rape). In the artwork a partially dressed woman poses limply, melancholic, in a cluttered and windowless bedroom, as a man stands blocking the door, looking at her with hands stuffed in pockets. From the ornate wallpaper to the slumped, partly bare body, it’s eerily close to a typical Bertillon composition. The viewer is placed in the position of having interrupted something intimate and sinister. Bertillon and Degas were contemporaries. Although there is no evidence they met, a curator at Paris’s Musee d’Orsay has said Degas’s Interior betrays 'the scientific gaze of a Bertillon assistant at a crime scene.'”

Hey man

If you tell me more about a woman who has no time for overly feminist "not positive enough" women, yet happily makes all the excuses in the world for a man and his blunders, then I will tell you she wouldn't be respecting him at all if he were born into a different kind of body in difference circumstances. This is an example what patriarchal brainwashing does to some people.

I said, I saw that one earlier today.

And then for some reason I told him a little story. I said a girl in creative writing class in high school told me she had been assaulted by her ex-boyfriend. I don't know why we started talking about it. Maybe it was connected to suffering from depression or being prescribed anti-depressants. And she told me, she used to stare at that guy's sister in choir practice and cry.

And then what happened? One of my friends became friends with that guy's sister. And I started hanging out with her too. And the girl in my creative writing class disappeared. What happened to her? Did she see me hanging out with the sister?

The brother knew I didn't like him. He said to me, "You've heard bad things about me, and they are not true."

The man who showed me this didn't have such a story coming up for him, but he shared his thoughts on the link.

I was also reading about Sally Horner

"Not a single person, when I quoted the passage about Sally Horner, remembered it.

I can’t say Nabokov designed the book to hide Sally from the reader. Given that the story moves so quickly, perhaps an homage to the highways Humbert and Dolores traverse over many thousands of miles in their cross-country odyssey, it’s easy to miss a lot as you go. But I would argue that even casual readers of Lolita, who number in the tens of millions, plus the many more millions with some awareness of the novel, the two film versions, or its place in the culture these past six decades, should pay attention to the story of Sally Horner because it is the story of so many girls and women, not just in America, but everywhere."

Optimism: the belief that almost everyone has a good side!

Why not take your most excellent, mature moments in life, replicate them in your mind, and endeavor to be more like that in the future.

Acknowledgement = helpful ripples across society

"One of Ms. Spears’s most disturbing claims this week was that she was forced to get an IUD to prevent her from having more children; it was not just her money they wanted to control, but also her body, because in entertainment, for young women, the two are almost invariably intertwined. I’ve experienced my own version of this dynamic. Growing up, my weight was openly discussed by everyone, from family members to Hollywood creatives. I’d grin and bear it, because staying silent — and thin — meant I would get hired again; getting hired again meant people would be proud of me and that I would have the money that was needed to keep the ship afloat.

Again, none of this amounts to the dynamics of control and abuse that we’ve heard about in Britney Spears’s case. But I can see how easy it would have been to slip into those dynamics. In these situations, some kind of damage is invariably done — a stunting of the ability of an individual to grow and make the most basic of decisions, or practice good boundaries."

~ A. Tamblyn

In this case, the acknowledgement is that even to the "successful," the system was far from kind.

I DID IT

I GOT HAPPY.

I made myself a skinny margarita with ice that I crushed in my Vitamix and felt happy about having a Vitamix, and smiled at remembering how the character of the Postmates guy asked the young woman in Hacks if she had a Vitamix and looked at my small purchase of discounted cookware (that I got alongside the skinny margarita mix) and smiled at it and said "Like."

And also

"Suffer Jet Suffragette City" came on the radio and it's such a fun song but it also reminded me of Eighth Grade when the PE teacher in Health class referenced it in warning us what highschool guys were gonna be like with freshman girls, and I thought about how so many of those guys are getting SCHOOOOOOOLED right now. Okay, to be honest, a lot of them are probably not paying attention, but I don't care! A lot of them are! MORE THAN THEY ADMIT.

And "Back in the USSR" also came on the radio. That's just a fun song with no particular dark associations...OR IS IT????

HA.

That's what 2 years at a Jesuit College are for...

"Ricki Ruiz grew up the son of two farmworkers, and he remembers his family’s struggles vividly.

'We almost faced eviction five times because we didn’t have enough money for rent,” said Ruiz, a first-term Democrat. “We didn’t go to the grocery store; we went to the food bank. We didn’t have extra clothes.'

Ruiz hopes to change that situation for farmworkers in Oregon. He sponsored a bill that will mandate that farmworkers be paid overtime for any work beyond 40 hours a week."

"Jamie Spears sounds no different than Maryon Cooper Hewitt, insinuating about her daughter’s indiscretions. The loving protection, just a cover for control and power and, of course, money. But it’s supported by a society that still refuses to see women as fully competent human beings.

Women have never been in control, not of our own bodies, not over ourselves. And Jamie Spears is an embodiment of that patriarchal control dressed up in fatherly benevolence. Telling a grown-ass woman what she can and cannot do for herself, while hand-wringing about her past indiscretions, as if he’s known or done better."

Nap weeks

I have never done so much spontaneous falling asleep in my life. I might be in a body that is a puppet of the universe.

One can & one does

One cannot help but wonder why the universe keeps showing one the same f**king thing over and over again sometimes.

3rd p.

I could almost imagine using 3rd person a lot if I were hugely different. I seem to sometimes have various personalities on the periphery, which is a distinct way of participating in the experience called life.

Yes, "not surprisingly"

"Perhaps not surprisingly, the survey showed that compared to women, men are less supportive of gender equality, less likely to see sexism as extensive and systematic, and more likely to endorse men's dominance in relationships and families."

What is still very unpleasantly surprising is how many women still go along with old-fashioned behavior patterns and expect other women to do the same.

Such X-Centric Social Practices

Old Patriarchal Habits:

"I wish you would just accept and enjoy our incredibly Low Standards for how we treat women because it's way more fun for us that way. For us, it is not about you or your quality of life, Person who was born into That Type of Body That We Were Trained to Deem Less Important"

Person born into That Type of Body:

"Humanity includes lots of people you were raised to unsee. SOMETIMES when you seem to start to see others, you give hope, but then it turns out you could only see them for very superficial reasons, and that's sad. I think if you and a few others showed that you had higher standards for treating women better, you would be much more trustworthy and more of a gift to humanity, which includes a lot of people you were raised to disregard and not see. Stop treating people like trash just because you were raised with low standards. Patriarchy has in the past ruined a lot of things. You have a way of reminding some of us that it still does because of your carelessness and narcissistic practices."

Some people have a way of reminding you of that society needs to stop treating women like crap. Have you ever felt like the universe was giving you reminders not to encourage people to keep on with the same old-fashioned unhealthy BS patterns. I don't know how to communicate to some people it's not okay, when clearly their patriarchal upbringings taught them it was the thing to do, to be careless and disrespectful.

Just because your parents gave you messages that it was okay doesn't mean you have to repeat their patterns.

Hypnosis of the...what?

Trigger again? The UNIVERSE is STUBBORNNESS too sometimes?

https://www.courier-journal.com/story/news/education/2021/06/16/lawsuit-archdiocese-louisville-fired-unmarried-pregnant-saint-andrew-academy-teacher/7698546002/

But who cares about pregnant women being fired say the guys at the top of the food chain and the women who got trained to disregard other women.

Change seems very slow with some

The icecream didn't change much. It is very tiring to repeat oneself.

It is like running into a dead end, a wall of stubbornness. People communicate that they do not want change to happen all that badly, because the current system is good enough for them.

Women who make excuses for men behaving badly are not doing it because they cry at night about poorer women getting assaulted in the fields so they can eat fruit salads. They are doing what the patriarchy trained them to do.

And yet, what if some people really do not know what they do? Should you try to talk to them? Or is it that they just don't care? The second possibility seems all too likely, sometimes.

In 2021, wishing life hadn't taught some of us that "nice" people are trained to make excuses for social practices that to lead to a lot of people being treated poorly, which is really only "nice" for...who is that "nice" for exactly?

Patriarchal behavior patterns keep ruining things that could have been good.

Vibes...That "these are the people who would have to literally see someone get run over by a bus in front of them to develop the necessary level of sensitivity" vibe? That was not a joyous or fun feeling.

The wall of stubbornness said "here's where something good could've been started....psych."

This is why it's at least nice to remember children and grandchildren can be their own people, and not necessarily repeat old patterns.

I don't know what sketch this is referring to

"Under Attack by Aubrey Hirsch" - The Audacity.

https://audacity.substack.com/p/under-attack-by-aubrey-hirsch

"What sort of motherhood is this? My mother's focus seemed to be on preserving unborn children rather than on caring for her already born children, a position advocated in a right-wing magazine, The New American , which carries this ad in its September 1997 issue: 'ABORTION: AMERICA'S GREATEST CRIME. Human life is a precious gift from God. A country that legalizes the wholesale slaughter of its unborn children will surely one day have to answer to the Lord' (p. 28).

"Yet my mother did care for her children, to the best of her ability. Tragically, however, my mother did not have the opportunity to examine her belief in sacrificial motherhood or the actions that her belief enabled. Rather than saying no to the demands of her children or friends, my mother would give and give and give until resentment set in, at which time she withdrew in angry silence. Yet, as Jessica Benjamin argues in The Bonds of Love , a mother's right to establish boundaries is rarely put forward as a model of her children's mental health, let alone of her own."

New living circumstances challenges

Even though it was nice to see and pet Frank the handsome cat near the apartment they want to move us into as they do repairs on the building we currently live in, I felt a huge "no" coming up. The deck and view at the new place would be terrible. Noisy, big dirt lot, loud intersection, right next to big glaring lights of the high school. It is not a fair trade. I do not want to move there now. I would never choose that place if we were looking at apartments. Maybe we will be doing that again soon.
