On the Central Coast:
- 27,000 indigenous people from Central and South America live and work in the Salinas Valley.
- The South Salinas Valley has the highest percentage of families living in poverty in California.
At Natividad Medical Center:
- 70% of patients work in the agriculture or service industries
- More than 50% of patients have limited English proficiency
- 4 of the top 10 most commonly spoken languages at Natividad are indigenous languages from Mexico (Mixteco, Zapotec, Triqui and Chatino)
- 70% of patients are women and children
- 1 in 3 patients has low literacy in their native language
