"Author Gary Paul Nabhan's new book celebrates revolutionaries of the borderlands"
"What do you hope people take away from your book?
Well, there's a lot of despair right now. I mean, I've heard it from friends who've been in community service and activists and nonprofits and educational institutions for decades, and I've never seen them so close to total despair. And I think knowing that there have been a dozen waves of cultural resistance that precede us, that we can learn from them how to have resilience in the face of adversity, to hold together the identity of a community like Tucson, who has always been welcoming. That's the most important thing that I could imagine, that the book does to remind people that they're not alone. This isn't the first time that little Davids have met ungodly Goliaths. We have the capacity to right the ship and then sail on, celebrating what we have rather than feeling defensive about it."
