Maybe the more materialistic and shallow grown-up people who are not particularly sensitive to how harmful the effects of abuse, sexism and racism are for others, including children, and who apparently want to pretend some stuff is just okay to go along with for their own selfish reasons, didn't feel very loved themselves as small children, and so now, as adults, they act like they just don't want to care about others or be better to other people, as a form of self-protection?
