Otto Frank, the father of Anne, a German man who had to leave his country under threat of persecution, and his colleagues / helpers / friends, really did the absolute best they could, as far as they understood, while dealing with the absolutely horrific circumstances.
(Currently skimming the introduction to "The Diary of Anne Frank - Critical Edition" and finding out more about some of those incredibly difficult circumstances.)
