"Sam responded to the strong emphasis on the outdoor life at Bunce Court. He enjoyed practical tasks, especially gardening. His confidence was low, but growing vegetables for the kitchen was something he could do. Tante Anna noticed his interest. She talked to him about his gardening and made sure he had a plot of his own, where he decided to grow carrots. Sam noticed that the teachers took a keen interest and were always ready to answer any questions. He responded to other acts of kind-heartedness. Miss Ney of the Jewish Refugees Committee 'made sure I got clothes, clothing that was useful for the weekend, several sets of clothing...' Sam knew it was all donated, but her concern about working out what fit each boy seemed to him 'a tremendous act of kindness'. Sam also appreciated the music at Bunce Court. He found 'it calmed me down'" (348 - 349).
