Early experiences with waiting tables

The first time I wasn't a shadow, I was 19 and waited on two men. One was having a birthday. His friend made a joke about him deserving a kiss. I just gave them a free slice of cake. The end of lunch involved a credit card machine that wouldn't print a receipt. The manager couldn't get the machine to work. He finally just signed the original receipt to say the transaction had gone through. The birthday man was very upset. He yelled at me, something about needing proof of his airline miles, and said he was never coming back. He needed that piece of paper to have a good day.

This was before you could access a lot of those transactions online...
