Water and what I would like

I would like to be able to live in an apartment where the water doesn't randomly get turned off from time to time without anyone telling us.

Three people with college degrees live here. Not that lack of college degree should matter. But we were taught that those degrees would help us have a better life. We just don't have the right kinds of college degrees.

We should have gotten the "high wage" types of college degrees. But guess what? Wages and rent weren't so bad back then!

I like having functional plumbing. I understand that sometimes they might need to turn the water off, but why not give some notice? I need water. WATER.

IF NOTICE IS GIVEN THEN I CAN MAKE SURE THE PITCHER IS FILLED AND THE CAT HAS FRESH WATER AND THE DISHES ARE WASHED

Wow, I got vitamins

It takes courage to incarnate with sinuses.

"In a major reversal, Ivanka Trump comes out in favor of working for what you get."

~ A. Giridharadas
  https://mobile.twitter.com/AnandWrites/status/1100398145165500416

"Despite the president's over-the-top hyping for the economy, real wages have remained flat, thanks to factors like persistent inflation, a regressive tax policy, the erosion of the manufacturing sector, and—above all—the unyielding corporate law principle of shareholder supremacy.

This dynamic is the reason why Ocasio-Cortez-esque politics are on the rise within the Democratic Party, and why millions of Americans are re-examining their reflexive, Soviet-era animosity towards things labeled "socialist." It's also why so many jobs guarantee proposals now sit firmly in the political mainstream: In a country in which 4 in 5 people live paycheck-to-paycheck, unfettered capitalism is very obviously not addressing the basic needs Trump identifies here. While straining to repudiate the merits of a federal employment safety net, she manages to offer a spirited argument for enacting one as soon as possible.

This is not the first time Ivanka Trump has visibly struggled to resolve the cognitive dissonance created by her burning desire for her liberal New York City friends to like her on the one hand, and her craven loyalty to this administration on the other. As is often the case these days, the most compelling arguments for taxing the rich come straight from the rich who would be taxed."

"The union has told reporters that 95 percent of teachers have joined the picket lines and that just three percent of students were in class on Friday. While this strike has already gone past the one-day mark of the Oakland teachers’ 2010 strike, it still has another three weeks to go before it catches the 26-day strike of 1996. Here’s hoping that teachers get a fair contract before then, and that no more similarly poorly compensated reporters have to take a bullet to tell Oakland residents about it."

Hello!

Man...Sometimes you just have to wake up.

"Betty – a white woman who left school after ninth grade, had her first child at age 16 and spent much of her life in severe poverty – wanted to vote.

So she waited with busted knees that once stood on factory lines. She waited with smoking-induced emphysema and the false teeth she’s had since her late 20s – both markers of our class. She waited with a womb that in the 1960s, before Roe v Wade, she paid a stranger to thrust a wire hanger inside after she discovered she was pregnant by a man she’d fled after he broke her jaw.

Betty worked for many years as a probation officer for the state judicial system in Wichita, Kansas, keeping tabs on men who had murdered and raped. As a result, it’s hard to faze her, but she has pronounced Republican candidate Donald Trump a sociopath 'whose mouth overloads his ass.'

No one loathes Trump – who suggested women should be punished for having abortions, who said hateful things about groups of people she has loved and worked alongside since childhood, whose pomp and indecency offends her modest, midwestern sensibility – more than she."

Big, big paragraph

"You might think that, above a certain income level, there would be diminishing returns for competitive parenting. Once you have an excellent school (probably in an expensive neighborhood), SAT tutors, music lessons and select sports leagues, aren’t the boxes of intensive parenting checked off? But American inequality has been particularly pronounced at the top, with larger and larger shares of income going to the top 1 or even 0.1 percent of earners, so even parents near the peak of the income scale feel inequality’s pressures. The desire to push children one rung higher is relentless. Indeed, since the 1980s, couples with more money and more education have increased the time and money spent on their children at a much faster rate than others."

"Then, of course, there’s student loan debt. According to the Federal Reserve, Millennials in their twenties carried an average debt of $22,135 last summer. This is one of the most integral metrics of the Millennial experience because of its implications for how much money a young person can save. Arecent study by ApartmentList claims that the rarefied minority of debt-free Millennials are putting away twice as much money as their counterparts who are still paying off balances."

Not everyone has student loan debt!

Not everyone is a public school teacher in Oakland!

"Regardless of intent, these Millennials are telling an older generation of elite Americans — the very people whose policies and financial decisions kneecapped the economy — what they want to hear: that everything is more or less okay, and young people just need to be more thoughtful about their money. And that’s a shitty idea to perpetuate. Because whatever happens in the years ahead, penny-pinching will likely remain a lifestyle enhancement for bourgeois Millennials who possess enough money to enjoy the dividends of being thrifty. For most of us, there are no dividends: just thrift."

As a result, high-achieving men are called back significantly more often than high-achieving women—at a rate of nearly 2-to-1. I further find that high-achieving women are most readily penalized when they major in math: high-achieving men math majors are called back three times as often as their women counterparts"

Some people have that extra talent

They remind you that needless cruelty is very inefficient.

They also remind you that it would be much wiser to get therapy and rehabilitation for a sad childhood instead of reenacting those terrible, controlling, abusive behavior patterns and mistreating other people.

By the way.

Based on their choices and behavior patterns, I have no reason to believe certain people are actually concerned about children's well-being beyond their own narcissistic, self-promoting activities. Especially children who would have been very badly treated during their own racist, misogynist, apartheid upbringing.

Gosh, studio apartments for teachers

That was possible.

"Just ten years ago..."  K. Brown according to S. Ghaffary

https://www.recode.net/2019/2/19/18232183/oakland-california-teachers-strike-economic-inequality-public-school-charter-prop13

Who can afford something...better?

Did you ever hear about women who didn't need any more abusive men in their lives...

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/mar/17/sexual-harassment-silicon-valley-emily-chang-brotopia-interview

Even the ones who were really "successful" during the *gag* "Trump" era...

https://www.newyorker.com/culture/cultural-comment/the-language-of-the-trump-administration-is-the-language-of-domestic-violence

What if successful, abusive men who continuously had lots of people always making special exceptions for their abusive behavior patterns that they would never make for other people with far less money somehow, miraculously found a way to stop being abusive...

When a studio apartment was possible

"While teachers in Oakland’s school district have seen stagnating annual wages — an average of $46,500 for the past five years — the cost of living in the city is now double the national average. An average one-bedroom apartment in Oakland rents for $2,680 a month, according to Zillow — an 86 percent increase from what it was less than 10 years ago.

'Just 10 years ago, a teacher could find a studio apartment in Oakland and be able to make ends meet, but that’s not a reality anymore,' said Keith Brown, president of the Oakland Education Association, the educators union; Brown has been a middle school teacher in Oakland for more than 20 years. 'The irony is that Oakland and the Bay Area have a booming tech industry, so it should reflect in having great public schools here that are well-funded.'”

Simple and attainable

Some lifetimes provide children with the great gift of "these adults are showing me what not to do when I grow up."

Being an enabler of abusive behavior is not going to age well, no matter how many times they get on another "re-tweet this good cause" kick.

People are worthy of more respect and fairer treatment. People are a part of the environment, too. Give the gift of being in touch with your own humanity.

Gosh why do I keep cooking even though I am not really hungry I had a big salad and some chicken and rice for dinner nevertheless I boiled spaghetti for the roasted tomatoes, simmered a blueberry-honey compote, and am going to make crepes with tapioca flour. It's all going in the fridge for later.

I feel strange...

On the other hand

The stranger who wanted me to pray for her to Jesus, the "right one," also added "not Buddha!"

And that was strange because I felt a little bit like I had been sitting in a Buddha pose.

I almost got the urge to meditate right there, except the cold and growling in my stomach gave me the impetus to leave.

Actually what really did it was a little drone...

Little drone...BIG DISTURBANCE.

Wouldn't it be cool if the world's shady uncles could cultivate the Zen mode instead of aging into the brother you hope no one's nieces ever date.

Books & strangers

Today I decided to contribute some of my old books to a little free library. It was mostly filled with old romances in paperback, and I wondered what effect my contributions might have. Later, as I sat on my blanket in a park, an older woman called out to me that I had the perfect spot and asked if I had been praying. I said I was not, but I could. She said, "Pray for me!" And she added, "to Jesus! Don't pray to the wrong one!" I thought about how I had been curious about what effect my old books might have on someone and remembered that one of them was A God Who Looks Like Me and wondered if the universe had delivered some kind of answer.

It's nice to see this getting respect because...

when I was young, (high school, college, early 20s) a lot of male peers would make fun of you for being interested in this sort of thing.

Hello, sir

You know what?

"Public service within the military-industrial complex is still widely gendered and conceived of as masculine, good, and — most important — valuable. By contrast, public service outside of the military (in schools, in public health, in legal defense, in nonprofits) is conceived of as feminine, and less valuable. A staggering 77% of public school teachers are women, and women make up 73% of nonprofit workers. When that work is figured as less essential to a functioning society, “investing” in it collectively (through direct government funding, in the form of tax dollars, or indirect funding, in the form of loan forgiveness) is deprioritized or rejected altogether. And that idea extends all the way to the Department of Education — the entity charged with facilitating the disbursement and payment of student loans — which has moved to roll back myriad protections for student borrowers and eliminate PSLF entirely."

It must be extra horrid to have PCOS if you're Mormon.

TBH this one may be a little bit much.

It's got a nausea factor.

Well, time to revisit the fates of fertility-challenged women in 3rd world countries.

Self-entertainment

This song was on the radio.

I made myself an assortment of "tea" sandwiches with what I had on hand:

Cucumber
Watercress
Radish
Anchovy
Butter
Grated lemon

And they were fine.
The best was probably the boiled egg.

Maybe I was just in the mood for a boiled egg.

It's 2019 and libraries are great

Kids, the waiting lists for Becoming and Winners Take All are something to behold.

In the meantime, happy to indulge in a little ANTICIPATORY READING.

"It just so happened that when I was there, the topic was how to disrupt writing. One of the questions that the VC proposed, was ‘can we use AI to replace all the writers?’ and I was there in the room. In the chapter, I basically described the discussion in which two VCs and a room full of brilliant AI geeks had a discussion about how we could get rid of all the writers. There were a couple of Europeans in the room, and they were the only people who were like, 'what about arts and culture? Aren’t their books that couldn’t be written by AI?' It was crazy to see. Everybody else was like 'no, no, it’s fine. We can disrupt that.' I watching this room of men decide that they would 'get rid of all the writers' and two 'money men', from very serious VC firms, who could put the money behind those ideas. I remember the last line of the chapter was ‘there was one woman in the room and she never spoke’."

Mini-fridge exudes wit, optimism, charm, mental health, and...WOW!

"According to data from the U.S. Department of Education, only about 300 borrowers have received public service loan forgiveness based on more than 73,600 processed applications. That’s less than 0.5%."

A little trail history

I can haz relaxing book???

Was just looking for a good yarn...

http://blogs.mycentraljersey.com/institches/2013/09/04/book-review-the-yarn-whisperer-by-clara-parkes/

Hah!

"I was raised to agree, to support, and to stand out as little as possible. You may know my mother from such hits as, 'What should I order?' and 'Am I cold? Do I need a sweater?' Meanwhile, my father was happily tucked in the Rochester Philharmonic as second-chair oboe for more than thirty years, preferring to be eaten alive by wolves than to be singled out for a standing ovation."

(The Yarn Whisperer ~ Clara Parkes ~ pg. 18)

As well as being necessary

Articles such as this one about the "MeToo" movement are good....

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/03/opinion/kavanaugh-misogyny-epistemic-worlds.html

It only fails to mention how the women who treat men as more important than everyone else also contribute to the world being more unsafe.

In the home

Some people have a way of reminding you that, like charity, it is where abusiveness, shallowness, misogyny, and cruelty begins.

Altogether mystifying

This sort of pattern:

One personality : so lonely, deeply lonely Another personality:  heh, my powers are increasing, all the better to control and push ppl around!

Muscleme raised brow

Sounds like a really interesting evening at a place called "The Players Club."

Huh!

Diluvial dilemmas

When you wish to walk in the woods but the wash is overflowing with water and the sunset is coming on.

Temporary

Even the people who seem "on top" today are really not as secure as they seem.

https://www.cnn.com/2019/02/05/perspectives/state-of-the-union-trump-economy/index.html

Because there are too many shallow, narcissistic, xenophobic, greedy people who are pushovers and think their own temporary comfort is more important than actually having a healthy society.

It's ART day

A CHILD
(the thousands separated from their families
might overwhelm the brain) merely because
of a circumstance such as being born on
the 'wrong side of the border' is residing
in a concentration camp right now.

Texas History

From "The Rise and Fall of the Tornillo Tent City for Migrant Children" by R. Moore

"Rubin, the Brooklyn software engineer who kept vigil in a small camper since October, left on Monday. He said he promised his wife he wouldn’t stay more than three months. Rubin said he will continue his mission to ensure that Americans don’t forget what happened at Tornillo in 2018. 'The thing that always struck me is that the government has an odd and inconsistent narrative. It says first that these are very, very dangerous people that we have to confine. And then it says we have to protect them, and we have to keep them a really long time in confinement, to protect them from what are essentially their families,' Rubin said."

Time to take supplements for the pain.

Even some "nice" people can be very insensitive - even cruelly so - about poverty and income inequality.

And about girls' pain.

And about women's health.

Which is linked to poverty, income inequality, and even "nice" people being insensitive - even cruelly and needlessly so.

Too late

"Dishonest, abusive one-percenters who taught you more than you ever wanted to know about their privilege bubbles, cruel behavior patterns, and white supremacy."
