Triangle Fire

From Rum, Romanism, and Rebellion

Sweatshop Garments Drag All Of Us Down referenced the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, which I remember learning about when I visited a museum in upstate NY as a teenager (I think it was by "the Egg"). I'd been to the museum as a child, so it was strange to come back in a taller/bigger body and look at things from that vantage point. I also felt very fascinated by the exhibit, in a terrible way.

Some things online about garment workers who survived the Triangle Shirtwaist fire in 1911:

My First Job - Rose Cohen
Rose Cohen & Isidore Wegodner

~~~~~~~
The Sweatshops Garments article also mentioned three more recent garment factory fires:
7 people died in a fire at Smart Fashion Export in Bangladesh on Jan. 26, 2013
112 died in a fire at Tazreen Fashions in Bangladesh on Nov. 24, 2012
250+ died at Ali Enterprises in Pakistan (and there were also 25 deaths in a fire at a shoe factory on the same day?) on Sept. 11, 2012
Hooray!
Had to find something to make me feel a little better before I went to bed.
Chester Township woman helps battle modern-day slavery
"Neigher said her lifelong concerns about human trafficking began when she wrote a ninth-grade paper on migrant laborers while a student at Monroe High School in Rochester, N.Y. Her mother was a social worker in a county with a high population of migrant workers."
~~~~~~

Maybe a little less hoorayish:

In Deterring Modern-Day Slavery, California is Stopped Short

"Young children and women remain heavily exploited. Crisis Aid states that the average age of a trafficked victim is 12-14 years old; however, girls as young as 5 and 6 years old may be sexually trafficked in the United States."

"With regards to forced labor, 40-50% of the exploited are children, while 56% of all forced labor victims are women and girls. Health and Human Services claims that “women and children are overwhelmingly trafficked in labor arenas because of their relative lack of power, social marginalization, and their overall status as compared to men.”

"Two types of labor trafficking exists: bonded and forced. The former, also known as debt bondage, remains the most common form of enslavement. The victim must repay a loan by providing labor, and the value of his/her work often exceeds the sum of money owed. The latter forces one to work under threats of violence against the individual or the family."

Sunday videos

Sometimes, I just watch videos b.f. shows me, and then watch other stuff on my own.

Not necessarily in this order:

My Little Brony

Twister Commercial

Your Printer is a Brat

Kids shows

So apparently, "My Little Pony" was revived (I'm pretty sure I've seen the dolls in stores) and now there are grown men called "Bronies" who really like it a lot.
Adult Male My Little Pony fans
Huh.
Yes, I suppose it sufficiently interests a person who at one point got made fun of by boys (well, mildly teased, really not that bad) for playing with toy ponies. And I don't know any adult men who watch the show. I don't watch it. But I don't have cable. Barely have a functioning TV. Anyway.

I'm a Brony. Don't think it's that big a deal though - I've always enjoyed She-Ra, Jem, Hello Kitty and all manner of things that are considered 'for girls'. There's no reasons why things can't be 'cute' and 'badass' at the same time. Now, if only Season 3 would start.

Songs and shoes and clothes and etc.

I just came across an interesting post about the "Wings" song! I didn't know all those people would be exposed to it like that...but I think it's cool to think that now a lot of people might go and seek out the full song after being exposed to just part of the song. I think some of those songs triggered some feelings in me... For example, I have been wondering off and on about which countries my clothing has been coming from for years. It feels very natural for me to wonder about that, and if my wonderment also deepens into regularly feeling concern for the treatment of the people who make the shoes on my feet and the clothes on my back, then that's probably how it should be.

Interesting quotes from pages about fashion

A quote from Introducing Fashioning Change:

"The ideas behind the company were instilled in me by my father. He grew up in Juarez, Mexico, a city that many consumer-goods companies use as an outsourcing location. He had friends and family who worked in many of the factories, and he saw the impact people could have when they chose to purchase one brand over another. With that in mind, he gave my brothers and me three rules we had to abide by when making purchases: One, we couldn’t buy anything made in Asia because he believed the manufacturing practices in many Asian countries were worse than they were in Mexico. Two, we weren’t allowed to buy clothing made of synthetic materials. And three, we weren’t allowed to wear dark clothing because he believed that children were the light of the world and should dress in bright colors."

and a National Park Service page about the historic Anjac Fashion Building:

"In view of the fact that Los Angeles was, and remains today, an important center of the Mexican working-class population, and that Mexicana workers are still the major work force in the garment and needle trades industry, the garment strike of 1933 should be commemorated. Working conditions that strikers protested against in 1933 have not changed dramatically in the garment industry since that time. Recent Latina and Asian immigrants suffer many of the same degrading and humiliating sweatshop conditions their sisters struck against in 1933: no control of hours and wages, exploitative piecework rates, and no place to go for redress of grievances for fear of being fired or deported."

Garment Industry Booklet

Summary of Some Basic California and Federal Requirements....

"Much of the clothing we wear each day is made in factories in California employing California workers. Some of these factories are large, modern enterprises that scrupulously follow California's labor laws and maintain safe and healthy workplaces; others are fledgling enterprises, whittled out of storefronts or apartments. In the face of powerful competitive forces, some employers are tempted to cut corners on wages and health and safety laws to gain a competitive edge and amass working capital. These employers unfairly undercut law abiding employers while their employees, often California's poorest and most defenseless workers, lose wages and endure higher risks of workplace injury and illness. Most factories run 24 hours a day, causing production workers to work evenings and weekends. Many operations work on rotating schedules, which can cause sleep disorders and other stress from constant changes in work hours. Overtime is common for these workers during periods of peak production. Working conditions vary greatly."

"This booklet is not intended to answer all employment-related questions, but rather to serve as a guide and reference as questions arise. Issues, such as employment discrimination and taxation, are not addressed in this booklet. While every effort has been made to ensure that the information contained in this digest is accurate, laws, as well as policies and procedures, are subject to change. Therefore, it is important that you keep up to date on developments. You should also consider contacting employer groups, trade associations, unions and other employee advocacy groups for assistance..."

At home: Me. (I need to learn to do a better job of it.)
Out and about: I don't know who cleaned those bathrooms.

This is pretty gross, so I couldn't read all of it, but the title alone just attracted my little lower-mind mentality:

Ha ha.

My little lower mind also thinks it'd be pretty funny to substitute words like "outgoing Battalion Commander" and "ingoing Battalion Commander" with the following:

a) people who think they're hot shit in academia (especially tenured fuckers)
b) people who think they're hot shit in Hollywood (especially folks with penises)

Whoa! How many rape-culture assisting people is that? Do I even know? Probably not! Part of me's still gotta work harder on achieving better, higher-level mentality, I'm afraid.

Looking for an old song...

I was looking for a kids song about going to the country store, 'cause it's happy and peppy. It has a lot of "Fiddley diddley diddley dee..." in it. I think my favorite verse when I was a kid was:

Fiddley diddley diddley dee

And me on the handlebars

The whole song wasn't online but I think there's a sample of it here.

Sometimes I think that maybe if there were more creative collaborations amongst grown-ups (you know, like the kinds of things that little kids might actually do together naturally???) we wouldn't have these societal constructs which seem to promote viewpoints such as people who were born "fancy on the outside" are more likely to excel at respected and better-paying occupations, while people who were born "fancy on the inside" are naturally more suited to lower-paying, less respected types of occupations...although, if you have doubts, then Desmond Morris's fascinating explanation in The Human Sexes on why girls are less capable than boys at tasks like technical drawing might please you...or maybe not.

Kids' stories

Today I tutored a little kid who told me about the comic book/movie idea that he's working on with his best friend and some other kids in his class. He said they came up with the ideas on their own and they're not doing it as an assignment. There are four boys and three girls working on the project. His character is an angel, and his best friend is a "bad guy" werewolf. The other boys are "good guy" wizards. The girls are two "good guy" vampires and one is an angel who got a spell cast on her by the bad guy when she went out to pick berries, and now she thinks she's a werewolf. They're all going to have to battle a snake with a werewolf head. The bad guy werewolf and the angel who thinks she's a werewolf are going to be on the side of the snake. When the boy angel meets the werewolf in battle, the werewolf is going to torture him by chanting a spell, singing "Who Let The Dogs Out," and dancing for ten minutes. Then the angel will defeat the snake with the help of his friends, which will break the spell so that the girl angel realizes that she's an angel and she no longer thinks she's a werewolf. The werewolf will be defeated in the end. All of the children who are working on this story want to grow up to write comic books and make movies, he told me.

A thing to wonder

Sometimes, when I think about what I've heard about how working conditions are for so many people who provide

1) clothing (as factory workers or garment sewers in the textile industry, for example)

2) food (as pickers on farms, for example)

3) sanitation (as housekeepers in hotels, for example)

I wonder why it seems like it is so easy for us to accidentally forget about them. It seems unfair.

If we are all in a web of interconnected life, wouldn't it be more natural for us to think more about people who are helping to provide us with clothing, food, sanitation, and a whole lot more?

Then I read stuff like this, and it brings me insight:

if you're going to be interested in clothing, fashion, etc., you should also take a little time out of your day to consider people who work in the textile industry.

"Honduras is the third largest exporter of clothes and textiles to the US market, employing approximately 110,000 workers, 53% of whom are young women from deprived backgrounds with little education. Many of the clothing factories are found in Honduras' 24 Export Processing Zones (EPZs), industrial areas with low or non-existent taxes and a cheap labour force designed to attract foreign investment."

Hurray, commentary backstory

"'The Light Princess' is hysterical. Although I disagree about Adela Cathcart, and just read a lovely cloth-bound reprint. If you want some really tedious sermons, by the way, I suggest looking up Lancelot Andrews, or the novels of John Newman--both widely read in their day. MacDonald is actually quite lively for 1864."

"About the swimming scenes--there's a fun bit of backstory behind that. John Ruskin read 'The Light Princess' in manuscript, and sent MacDonald a lengthy critique in which he suggested that the swimming scenes were too improper and would be damaging to children. (This from a childless and possibly impotent bachelor to a man with eleven children, but never mind.) MacDonald, however, published the story unaltered, but gave all of Ruskin's objections to Mrs. Cathcart, the grim voice of prudery and all things superificial--Adela's aunt, and the ostensible evil witch of the story. Ruskin promptly wrote a hilarious letter in mock-fury, accusing MacDonald of inventing 'all wrongs to choke up my poor little right with.' But in this case, MacDonald was right and Ruskin wrong, I'd say. "

A body today

Today was a day to be happy about not experiencing rippling spasms of pain...

It was also a day to contemplate how women's bodies are not other peoples' decorations...

And also to think about how interesting the internal workings of bodies are...

I would venture that the study of physiology and massage could be a good way to find out more about that...

To read if available

Ever since I read this review, I want to find the "enormously long three volume realistic novel Adela Cathcart, the story of an annoying and sickly young Victorian woman who is All Mysteriously Ill..."

G. is weird

Last night I dreamed I was walking up a creek or riverbed with a man who was like my husband and he was a black preacher. We climbed up a little cliff. He talked about jumping in the water. I pointed out that he didn't know how deep that water was and it might not be a good idea. He agreed, but did it anyway. He survived. Then I thought to jump into the water too, but instead, I was just going to climb back down and sedately walk into the river. But some force threw me off and I flew far away from where he'd landed. I landed in the water and survived. End of dream, but woke up with cramps and the need for a heating pad and castor oil pack. Later on, I skipped going to a baby shower because b.f. had to work and did other things. Then I ate some frozen yogurt. Shortly thereafter, terrible pains came over me. Whether it was indigestion combined with cramps or what, it felt a bit like having to push a bowling ball that didn't actually exist out of my stomach. I'm not in a real hurry to experience that again if I don't have to...when I did go through it, this is what was for me: 1) Steven Halpern on the mp3 player. 2) Castor oil pack. 3) Rescue Remedy. That's it. No movies, no TV shows. JUST STEVEN HALPERN ON THE MP3 PLAYER AND THAT IS IT.  Eventually I drifted off to sleep and got up and felt better and thought to write about this experience. And I Can't Tell You Why....

Bubbles

One time in recent memory I heard part of a debate on the radio between a colonel and an activist, which in part concerned the use of drones, and at the end they were talking about people living in "bubbles." I was intrigued, because I think everyone has been in some kind of bubble at some point.

Some of my bubbles have been quite Jesus-related. For example:

Oh, so random violence against girls and women is so common, apparently they don't look enough like Jesus to get people enraged and marching in the streets when that sort of thing happens.

Why Aren't We Shocked?

Women At Risk

Also

Mr. Nader's honeypot trauma is not applicable to J. Assange, and I'm sure the activist community can find a more worthy Jesus-like figure to worship.

Others not so much:

Oops, after reading about Steubenville, this photo-op accidentally reminded me of rape culture for some reason.

It may be useful for many people to try to figure out what kind of bubbles they live in.

Weird thoughts about celebrities & activism

I was futzing around on the computer this morning and then decided to get out and go to a park. But on my way back, in the car, I was thinking about how I looked up this older talented singer and how it seems he might sort of disagree with this other, younger talented singer (who knocked the Superbowl lights out) about some activisty type things. Now, since he's an elder, and therefore, older and wiser, I kind of think this is more on him. I mean, the girl was born in 1981. I know she's a new mother, but still, she's practically a baby! (I admit a prejudice: I have a baby sister who was born that year so that's how it seems to me.) And who knows, maybe in another life, they were totally BFFs who were almost the same age and did yoga together and said that special word that means "I honor the place within you where the entire Universe resides; I honor the place within you of love, of light, of truth, of peace; I honor the place within you, where, when you are in that place in you, and I am in that place in me, there is only one of us," and deep down, they really love each other and stuff.

Anyhoo. So I think he just kinda needs to get on her wavelength a little more. Okay. So first, he should've hit her up on twitter, and been like, girl, your ass is looking fine in that dress! Bootylicious! You go girl! You liberate us all with those curves! Ain't nothing wrong with being a fine woman with curves. And stuff like that, and therefore, gotten to be better friends with her. Then, after a while, he could mention that he's got this friend who is an up and coming designer for women with curves. And she is so talented, but if she only had someone with celebrity star power to wear a few of her fashions, she could just rise, she could just catapult to the top and finally realize her destiny, her full potential! And send her some pictures of the friend's very best designs, to show how talented the designer is. And get her dress sizes and send some of them to her. They could arrange it so that, in her spare time, B. could wear a few of those articles of clothing while she's out and about ...and then this person would start to get very famous. And it would be, of course, because she's talented, but also, thanks to that extra celebrity star power boost!

And since we all know how talented, successful people love to give back to the community, maybe they could at some point arrange a charity fashion show to do something really great like Support the Troops and Their Families Who Also Sacrifice. Yes! Nothing better than giving back to those who gave their all so you could succeed, right? Oh, and then, there could be another fashion show, and this one would benefit victims of terrorist attacks. Like when some flying thing comes and bombs you out of nowhere, and you're just a little kid, and now your home  and your parents are gone and you've got nothing, but at least if someone holds a fashion show somewhere and raises a little money, at least then we know there's still a light of hope on this planet! But maybe he doesn't have to mention who threw down the bombs. At least not right away, cause that would be so conflicting, politically. But maybe eventually, you know, they could sit down and have some tea and do yoga and say that word that means "I honor the place within you where the entire Universe resides; I honor the place within you of love, of light, of truth, of peace; I honor the place within you, where, when you are in that place in you, and I am in that place in me, there is only one of us," and talk about how deep down, they really love each other, and then talk about it.

So that's what I sort of think Harry should've said to Belafonte, I mean, Beyonce. Whew! I dunno if it's really a good idea or not though, so maybe other people have some better ideas.

Silly O

Pictures like Drone That Destroyed Wrong Target Casually Flying Away Like Nothing Even Happened remind me of that really bad dream I had before my shift when I worked at a restaurant outside of DC in 2007 where I was a sister trying to save my little brother and then a bomb fell on us and I guess we died or something.

Almost time for quiet music

Interesting day. Got to see some cool rocks again, got a gimpy knee again, felt tired and decided to stay home and abstain from SB activities (again), read about 49ers and miner's lettuce in a book about edible plants, went on the computer to do some work, got distracted, and via clicking on this and that, read about this guy's life and death, heard people next door making some kind of big noise about the game, got a surge of really bad headache, went for a walk, talked to someone on the phone about SB power outage, read about the boxer rooting for the Ravens, decided to watch the music video for Mama Said To Knock You Out for the first time, and now, almost time for some nice, quiet music.

It was fun to listen to Wait Wait... in the car in the morning. I, too, thought the two brothers thing sounded more interesting than the actual football game.

Miner's Lettuce dilemma

I believe I know of a nearby patch of miner's lettuce but don't know if I will ever feel sure enough to actually pick it and put it in a salad.

little moments -- weird, unplanned

While listening to Agent Orange and looking up BFP, sounds from another computer waft across the room.
X: Who is is that?
Y: Trent Reznor
X: What's he doing?
Y: Telling people to steal his music.

Albert Einstein meets Marilyn Monroe by Quint Bucholz

Quote and Marilyn reference

A thought-provoking quote from a Washington Times book reviewer:

Miss Ciezadlo notes that “[m]ost civilians experience war not as the fighters and victims that parade across television screens, but as tired housewives peeling potatoes and wondering, all the while, at the stupidity of it. Being trapped in the house … forced me to experience the awful, humiliating tedium of war without the anaesthetic of danger or the narcotic self-importance of risk - to go through it not as a witness, not as a journalist, but as a human being.”

Also, I just came across an unexpected Marilyn reference....

Books to movies

I have gotten a chance to read and enjoy Gods Behaving Badly, which is to be made into a movie. I went and looked up which actors/actresses are going to be in the film.  I have to admit, I was a little bit shocked at the choice for Apollo. Not based on acting abilities or anything, but lookswise, Apollo always struck me as being a bit of a beauty queen (like the male version of Sharon Stone)...but I guess I momentarily forgot about "the formula" (as somewhat bitterly touched on in this post: A Deeply Philosophical Rant). I suppose that the physical standards which are still applied to most actresses would start to look different if they would ever consider casting someone like Melissa McCarthy as Aphrodite. I doubt I could have come up with a comparision very quickly before the movie Bridesmaids came out...
