"Inside the Sexual Assault Scandal Plaguing a High School District" by Carter Sherman

https://www.vice.com/en/article/v7vg9y/inside-the-sexual-assault-scandal-plaguing-a-high-school-district

"The plan had been for Wombwell and Evans to share their stories. Then, their allies would share anonymous testimonials, collected by a group started in part by the duo, of sexual assault and harassment at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

A few people managed to read the accounts. One shared the story of a student who said they were raped as a freshman. (“I reported it to the school because he went there too. They did nothing for me, regardless of me saying I felt unsafe on campus.”) Another read the account of a student who said they were first sexually harassed at school at 13 years old. (“I go to school with my assailants. They go about their day like normal. I sit next to boys who harassed and assaulted me for years.”)

Then, a staffer told Board of Education Chair Elyse Dashew that board rules don’t let people read statements from individuals who aren’t signed up to speak. And when Wombwell’s fiancé got up to share an account, Dashew cut him off.

“People sign up to speak for themselves,” Dashew said. “So anybody else who has their own testimonial or feedback—”

“How do you expect a rape survivor to stand in front of the people that threatened them with suspension?” Evans interrupted. “Are you serious?”

People in the crowd started clapping. “Every story matters!” someone shouted.

Dashew tried to insist that Wombwell’s fiancé stop speaking. People started yelling. Finally, Dashew gave up. “OK, we'll break all the rules tonight,” she announced.

Wombwell burst into tears. Evans wrapped her arms around her.

“They will do anything they can to silence survivors instead of just actually doing the very reasonable basic things we're asking them to do,” Wombwell said minutes later, her voice shaking. “They care so much about their reputation and so little about their students.”

How hard is it to respect the environment?

"The United Nations warned that the ruling could delay internationally agreed-upon climate goals. “Decisions like the one today in the U.S. or any other major emitting economy make it harder to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement for a healthy, livable planet,” said the statement from the spokesman of Secretary General António Guterres. The statement said the actions of a single nation “should not and cannot make or break whether we reach our climate objectives.”

An unsustainable culture needs you to change.

A culture in which white men with money are treated as if their needs and concerns in life are more legitimate than what's going on with all the rest of the population is getting increasingly unhealthy. It is difficult to feel EVEN A LITTLE BIT respected or welcomed by people who choose to think that way or behave that way, as demonstrated by their actions, choices, and words.

She knows that women's rights are human rights even if the world acts as if it is not so.

"And maybe it fit that as I was losing my mother, watching her disappear into dementia, we Americans were losing our rights.

After the Dobbs decision came down, my mother called me. 'I want to tweet something, but I don’t remember how to.'

'Oh,' I said. I sort of wanted to cry, but I was also sort of happy for her, that she didn’t have to deal with the exquisite pain that is reality.

'I want to tweet: Women’s rights are human rights.'”

Patriarchal colonized woman or man: But I thought this was an okay way to be because I got the impression that a lot of women were fine with it too.

They were brainwashed, man.

Some still are. A lot of times that stuff ( sexist cultural programming) doesn't just go away overnight.

It is also a health issue?

People who do not seem to be able to express kindness or compassion about this crime against human rights because they want to live in some wealthy people bubble and pretend stuff is okay truly seem to be in frightening place. So are the people who keep enabling and making excuses for them.

YOU WERE BORN TO BE BETTER THAN THAT. NOT SO INSENSITIVE, PATRIARCHAL AND COLONIZED.

Time to find out more about what's better!

The fearful and sexist ones who are too selfish to care have already gotten lots of attention.

I found a good thing to remember

Today we dealt with people (well, a woman) who were a bit pushy with us about some things related to a time schedule and finances and I was with a man who was so nice...she said to me "he's so quiet!" Well maybe he was experiencing the discomfort zone and getting through it by being nice.

And even though part of me was like oh why aren't we tougher about our schedule and other things, as I know some can be...

But then I thought about it and I truly love that nice bright light...and tinged with that very human trait, a bit of nervousness...but still how beautiful.

People can be polite as a way of expressing themselves.

MAN. Why doesn't society reward men more for being good and nice as adults as they were when they were little?

Isn't it rare? Why not celebrate it more?

And I love him. And we had a harmonious lunch that I made for us afterwards. These are the kinds of things I should be thinking about more, especially when life gets so challenging.

I would go like to there...

HERE'S A NOVEL IDEA.

WHY NOT LEARN TO RESPECT YOURSELF AND THEREFORE IT MIGHT BE EASIER TO RESPECT OTHER PEOPLE TOO.

Some people make you see why some of the "nice people" were the same ones who  made all the excuses for bad behavior in Hollywood and in the church and in other places for so many years.

Was a society that treated others badly really so comfortable for them? If so, that is sad because they don't even know how much better it might have been.

Honestly, I wonder if maybe sometimes people act out because they want to trigger change? Or they  subconsciously wish someone would address their problems instead of letting it go unaddressed?

Wow, so much appreciation?! And being so nice in public to a trash can. Makes one think it must be especially hard when the patriarchy aims those "Rich people are trained to expect the world to 'make everything about me!'" vibes at those who tossed aside parts of themselves ... just like pieces, discarded into a trash can.

To get ahead in a patriarchal culture, one must do that in order to treat certain people badly, but then nicely, to make up for it? Well, it seems that kind of mindset is definitely not too concerned about young people who are being harmed by that patriarchal culture.

Another part of why the contentment of some with keeping a lot of things that way truly feels sad is that these do not seem to be people who know how to protect young people from predators. Probably not even the super rich ones.

On the other hand why not shed more light on why that might be so? I suppose that could be useful. Wouldn't be too surprised if more of their "that was fine with me" judgements get questioned further as time unfolds. Although there will undoubtedly be other, far more pressing things to worry about...

Certain people have been rewarded for showing a lack sensitivity for a long time, and deep down inside I think some of them know it. But surely, it was not always that way? Maybe some of those people were better at being sensitive when they were younger. In fact, maybe it is even likely that they were.

But then patriarchal practices influenced them and things got very warped.

Perhaps that is part of why they crave support, so that they can feel reassured. So everyone else changes to accommodate them and their needs. They have been taught it is best to be that way. But is it?

It's as if their curiosity about the world got replaced with a drug called immense self-absorption and lack of empathy. It seems very difficult for some of them to care about anyone except themselves, and yet it is as if they have a hard time doing that also. And that's far less learning about themselves than they could have been doing in this life time.

They might even be doing themselves a huge favor if they weren't so Irresponsible-to-Others, too.

Are they saying they are acting like

careless & self-absorbed people?

"He justified today’s ruling removing the bodily autonomy of millions of women by using the writings of a guy who was born in 1609, who had women executed for “witchcraft,” and thought men should be able to rape their wives at will.

Instead imagine the ruling that might have been handed down by nine justices who had K-12 relationships and sexuality education. It’s an education researchers have found not only improves a student’s current and future sexual and relationship health, personal safety and likelihood to stick up for someone else being bullied, but also reduces students’ belief in sexist gender norms and stereotypes, and increases their ability to practice affirmative consent, which is based in a recognition of the right each of us has to control our own bodies.

Am I suggesting that Sam Alito would be a fundamentally different person if he had better sex education? Maybe. Maybe not. I am saying that if more of us had this kind of schooling, we’d be a lot less likely to support or even tolerate would-be leaders who think America was better when women couldn’t have a credit card in their name or make decisions about their own bodies.

I am choosing health

I am grateful that today even though I have dizziness, I also have recovery. Yesterday I had a nervous breakdown like I never want to experience again. The fight or flight response was overwhelming. Experiencing somethinglike that...it will tell you that you need to put your recovery and your health first all else. It is your life and you have got to give yourself a chance.

Human beings deserve so much better

I know something upsetting happened with regard to human rights...I know people are upset. I didn't have to look at much.

Mental health should be respected more by our society

It's like, on a few occasions in this lifetime, I have had children who didn't "know me" tell me the people around them weren't listening.

And so, on occassion, I have very nicely tried to talk to the people, and sometimes that was a success, so at least that was something.

An interesting POV

Toph Cassandra Beifong: AuDHD Electrical Engineer on Twitter: "I've been asking my male friends to do something - *watch if the first response to everything a woman tells you is to refute, say no or something negative* One texted me later: Holy f*ck The problem is, constantly putting up with unwarranted resistance is bad for mental health." / Twitter

https://mobile.twitter.com/W_Asherah/status/1536052863658561538

A thing that might get noticed is how some patriarchal women have similar reactions. Maybe they just really want to fit in with a certain group think mentality because they get real material rewards for doing so.

It's not just men.

I think that some men are better at not doing that than others, too.

Grateful for some recent messages
