Bubbles?

"It wasn’t until I started doing dishes that I realized men in my family don’t do dishes.

At parties, I rarely saw Martins men helping out in the kitchen. Instead, our grandmothers, aunts and female cousins (all Portuguese and Argentine immigrants) would cook and serve the meal, and afterward the men would stack their plates near the sink like a Jenga tower before returning to the table, where they would finish their wine and pick their teeth as the women cleaned up.

I decided I would be a different kind of man."

I feel more useful when I can do the dishes.

"I’ve often said that the best job I ever had was washing dishes at a small Italian restaurant just after college. I say I washed dishes. I also bussed tables and prepped food and, at the end of the night, would blow into the state-mandated breathalyzer on the owner’s car so he could drive home drunk."

There are a lot of nice young men

For example, yesterday when I bought a Chicago dog, I met one who was extremely friendly and gave great customer service. I spent very little money, but this did not matter. Another time, when I brought a scoop of chocolate ice cream, that young man who gave out the samples and rang me up at the register was very nice to me. He told me since my item was so small, he did not want to charge me any sales tax.

Here's a poem

For you.

http://literalmagazine.com/loose-woman/

Because of some boxes that were left on the curb, including a messy book written in and highlighted by someone else, which I gave away years ago.

And that was...intentional?

Did someone give up their violent hyper-macho video games?

Comes, goes, comes back

Even though the person who brought in 2 boxes of books and violent video games put up a sign offering to give them back, I think they are for us. This is because one of the books is one I gave away.

Cisneros' Loose Woman....I gave it away because I got it used, and it had been highlighted and written in by some other person. I didn't like all that, so I gave gave it away years ago.

Now it seems to have returned.

E.W. on Ambassadors

"Today, the United States lacks a presence in nearly 40% of world cities with populations over 3 million, many in the rapidly growing Indo-Pacific region.

The Pentagon is nearly 40 times bigger than the State Department — we employ more people to work in military grocery stores than we do foreign service officers. That has real consequences. Too often, our underinvestment in diplomacy and development causes our leaders to default to military action, instead of treating it as a last resort."

"Professionalizing our Ambassadors

Trump has perfected the act of selling swanky diplomatic posts to rich buffoons. In the Trump administration, $1 million buys you an appointment to the Bahamas — even if you’re not quite sure what that means. For $2 million, you can become Ambassador to the United Nations. Trump nominated a real estate lawyer accused of sexual harassment as ambassador to Romania. His South Africa nominee is a handbag designer. In all, Donald Trump has appointed political cronies to nearly half the available ambassadorial positions — far more than any president in recent memory. As a result, opportunities for career professionals are severely limited."

"The practice of auctioning off American diplomacy to the highest bidder must end."

Some extra detail

for deciding if/where to donate...

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/06/26/how-to-donate-to-help-migrant-children-at-the-border.html

"The easiest way to verify a charity's legitimacy is to look it up on a watchdog site such as Charity Navigator,   CharityWatchBBB Wise Giving Alliance and Great Nonprofits. These sites rate nonprofits and allow you to find out more about the organization and how donations are spent."

~ M. Leonhardt

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/06/26/how-to-donate-to-help-migrant-children-at-the-border.html

"A legal aid organization, the Florence Project, provides free legal services to detained immigrants in Arizona. An estimated 86% of those detained have no legal representation while going through immigration removal proceedings, the organization says.

In addition to donations, the Florence Project also accepts volunteers. If you live in Arizona, you can help out directly as a translator, researcher or pro bono attorney if you're qualified.

The organization receives a three-star rating from Charity Navigator (out of a possible four stars)."

Superintendent Biakpeh described the move as a huge outcome for Liberians.

“Our future goal is to see an overall abandonment of Bush School activities in our country,” Biakpeh added: He said a law must be enacted and properly implemented to ensure that every girl at risk is protected.

“The government needs to show strong commitment and prioritize the issue about Bush School activities in Liberia.”

Also speaking, Mary Larteh, Paramount Chief of Jorquelleh District in Bong County, said bringing an end to Bush School activities is possible, but there needs to be means of survival for those who already consider initiation as employment.

“They do it not out of love, but out of custom and ignorance,” she added.

"Speaking to FrontPageAfrica Thursday, the Vice President lamented: 'Today, the male-dominated Liberian legislature, passed the long-awaited Domestic Violence Law, but removed a very critical component; the section which made Female Genital Mutilation illegal under our laws. As a champion of the rights of women, I categorically denounce this decision. FGM is a violation of woman’s right to choose and human rights; which affects her physically and emotionally for the rest of her life. What We’re Told Not to Talk About (But We’re Going to Anyway) by Nimko Ali.

"Ali spoke to 152 women across 14 countries in the course of her research; many she encountered through her campaigning. It wasn’t hard to get them to open up since, she says, 'every woman I’ve ever met has a story to tell.' In the end, 42 made it into the book, all of whom appear under pseudonyms."

Asleep or during waking hours

The brain had to do some work...

"In 2017, two Detroit doctors were indicted for allegedly performing FGM on at least nine underage girls. The case brought the issue into the public eye — and challenged assumptions that the U.S. ban of FGM, passed in 1996, was working. Six others, including the girls’ mothers, were also charged for their roles.

But despite the case providing evidence that FGM was indeed taking place on American soil, the Michigan district judge ruled Congress had overstepped on states’ rights by enacting the statute in the first place. All FGM-related charges were dismissed, and the federal ban was thrown out.

With the DOJ refusing to appeal, banning FGM is now up to states."

Cute products

Bought these non-Keto items at the not-so-99-cent store and watched a girl get arrested in the parking lot.

Why is she posing like that and smiling on the back of the car? Oh, she has her hands cuffed.

I can't believe that when I was in junior high, a girl my age told us (my friend and I, and an adult) that a teacher at her school made her sit on his lap and said suggestive stuff and to my knowledge no one filed a complaint because the attitude was like that's just what happens sometimes when girls become teenagers. WTF????

I remember thinking that I was lucky I could fit into an old pair of jeans of hers. They were black and skin-tight. I never would wear them today. She gave them to me, and I wore them constantly.

A "kids" thought

Kids look up to teenagers a lot and absorb a ton of information from them.

I have vivid memories of my childhood babysitters, who were mostly teenage girls.

I also remember camp counselors from two time periods: 5th grade (the whole class went to an "outdoor school" for a week) and a summer "science" camp at age eleven or twelve? Those counselors were mostly age 14-16.

This one was bossy. That one dated guys way too old for her. She sure could sing and dance around a campfire.

*Actually it was too much sugar, and I left a big chunk of icing in the box, but I am impressed with the idea.

Felt like...

Some nicely dressed church people were very rude to me yesterday. The woman driving the car did not stop at the crosswalk. I was the pedestrian. I needed to cross.  Then she got a very angry look on her face because two cars pulled out in front of her. She was stopped on the crosswalk waiting for cars. I was waiting for her to move her car so I could use the crosswalk.

No, maybe those cars pulled out in front of her so she could let a pedestrian cross, as she could have done in the first place. I walked around her and the crosswalk. She had to wait because of two cars.

Then in the store she looks like she's following the man she is with all dutifully. Maybe he's gonna meet with his friends at the misogynistic Bible Study down at the coffee shop later.

They probably go home and treat their sons better than they treat their daughters too.

Good morning.

You should be able to enjoy living life as a girl.

Interessante vrouwen

Constant task

Laundering. Laundry rooms. Laundromats. Hampers. Detergent. Mesh Bags. Stain removal products. Wool dryer balls.

Like for some reason I can imagine a character staring at all the clothes flopping around through the round window of a laundromat machine and listening to "Chandelier."

Lovelorn Lovelurk

An interesting character who is very good at his job a lot of the time but there is an inner fragility which constantly threatens to crack his composure...darts his eyes about a lot when he gets very nervous. It is almost as if unresolved childhood trauma is lurking in the background...suspicion is heightened when he baselessly accuses an employee of something unspeakable...

He thinks he needs a girlfriend but actually what he probably needs is some very advanced form of therapy.

"...the official measure of 40 million people in poverty doesn’t even begin to capture who is poor in this country. Instead, using the more accurate supplemental-poverty measure, we see that 140 million people—more than 43 percent of the population—are poor or low-wealth, meaning one emergency away from poverty. That figure includes 9 million children, 74 million women, 26 million black people, 38 million Latinx people, 8 million Asian people, 2.14 million Native and Indigenous people, and 66 million white people. It’s consistent with findings that about 40 percent of the country can’t afford an unexpected $400 expense."

Go, Detroit

"As my Manhattan Institute colleague Stephen Eide observed in National Affairs, homelessness is not the product of poverty per se. Rather, homelessness is in no small part an artifact of being poor in a place where ferocious competition for a severely constrained supply of homes drives up rents. To offer one example of this dynamic at work, Detroit’s poverty rate is twice that of New York City’s, but because of its notably inexpensive real estate, it maintains a homelessness rate a third the size."

Hope things get better

Guess there was a reason that right before I moved out here, the man outside of the synagogue where I had attended a "clothing swap" told me he had come from LA & was living out of a bag.

"We"

"We just need more bathrooms. The situation is desperate. People are defecating on the streets. Communities that balk at seeing portable restrooms in their neighborhoods should realize this is not about sanctioning or 'normalizing' encampments; it’s about providing people who are already living in them with an alternative to using lawns and sidewalks as toilets.

This is a public emergency, a humanitarian crisis, a health threat — and it shouldn’t take years and years to solve."

For a good time

When you go to the bridge or other amazing place with your holy shirt, feel free to bring along an empty wine bottle and a print out of something interesting you've read. Or just quickly find an enjoyable read on the 'net.

Roll up the paper. Paper has many uses...insert paper in bottle. Leave both. That way, you will be giving away not only a free piece of cloth...you will also be gifting the lucky recipient with a "message in a bottle."

Change of plans, maybe

Don't just throw those chewed-up, holey, Les Miserablesy t-shirts away in the trash...Maybe make art...

Maybe toss over a bridge

Simulation of an aerial view

"Black dots represent the locations of homeless shelters/services.

Tracts are symbolized based on the relationship between homelessness and the walking distance from the center of each tract to the nearest shelter/services facility.

Dark brown tracts have a relatively high homeless population but are farther away from shelters/services."

Caritas in the simulation

In the park, a boy ran up to me, and he was smiling. I was eating a mango cupcake dusted with Tajin.

I said "Hello!"

His parents called his name and then he turned and ran in another direction.

He had two parents. And they were nice.

He ran over to a tree, saw something that upset him, and began to scream and cry.

He had parents to help him.

I was in the park for  a while, and I came back with the second cupcake.  I walked past a cupcake wrapper on the way in.

A girl ran up to me. "Excuse me. I just wanted to tell you that I love you."

"I am sorry, can you say that again?"

"I wanted to tell you that I love you."

(She used to say, "Where are your dads?")

"Oh, thank you. I love you too."

But the name of that blog gave me a semi severely distracting visual.

Felt guided anyway

When I bought it, a man was telling a woman he would take her to any concert she wanted and she said she had to ask her husband first and he said her husband could come too because it's a coworker thing and she said things were getting too crazy, ha ha, he was good

Good to know for TONIGHT

"(also known as the Honey Moon, Mead Moon, or Full Rose Moon) got its name from the Algonquin tribes in eastern North America who saw it as a signal that it was time to harvest the wild strawberries in their landscape...."

"The four mutable star signs–Sagittarius, Gemini, Virgo, and Pisces–are likely to feel this Moon’s influence the most."

"Lady Nakintu, a childless old woman was once told by a pastor that 'childless people do not go to heaven.' She cried herself sick. No consolation, from the community women, could reconcile her with going to church ever again. She hit the bottle, drinking all sorts of booze and died two months after." ~ E. Nakkazi

Time to sleep.

End the day on a fine mental health note.
